Mrs. Gilburt – Fifth Grade English/Language Arts
Posted on January 27, 2012, by Savannah Gilburt, under Fifth Grade.
As a new year begins, we reflect on the previous one. Before Christmas break, the 5th grade worked together to present the Jesse Tree. The students did a fantastic job in showing everyone the true meaning of Christmas. Here are a few photos…
English
We will be applying our Shurley English when we start our research paper. The students will be given a topic and see what it’s like to research, make note cards, avoid plagiarism, and combine their thoughts to make a research paper. It will be interesting to see how the students can bring all of their previous knowledge of grammar and sentence structure together.
We will also be using our poetry talents to make our treasure books. There are so many creative writers in this class, and I could not think of any better way of showcasing them than in the treasure book.
Reading
We are wrapping up The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and will be moving on to Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. This is a touching and solemn novel about friendship during World War II in Nazi-occupied territory. Students will read about a story that is much different than their lives over here in 21st century Texas. This is still one of my favorite books from elementary school, and I cannot wait to share it with the students.

Posted on March 7, 2011, by Alexis McClure, under Fourth Grade.
HOWDY PARENTS! I hope you are all doing well! This is what is going on in ELA and Social Studies for the end of February and March.
ELA
In Shurley Method, the students will continue to work on all the parts of speech from subject nouns to interjections. We began a new part of speech in the middle of February. This new piece was for the Direct Object. We will continue to work on these and later take a quiz to see if we have mastered this new piece. Our next piece in Shurley method will be the indirect object. This will not be introduced until we are all on the same page.
In Reading, we will continue to work in small groups for reading as well as whole group. We will be finishing our current novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham by the end of this month or early March. I will be sending home all the questions and the review as the time approaches as well as the next novel we will read.
During the month of March we will also begin working on our treasure books. We will begin choosing the journals we would like to include in our book and begin editing Friday, February 18th. We will send out more information as the time comes to order extra copies of your student’s own personal published book.
Social Studies:
As we move from February into March, we will continue to discuss the divide or break between Texas as a Republic and Mexico. We are currently reading and talking about the the first president of Texas that was voted in by the people as well as how the Texas Revolution was funded and the first battle of this revolution. We will continue in the next chapter by reading, discussing, learning and later watching THE ALAMO! The kids are really enjoying this part of Texas History! As the Texans demonstrated in the first battle of this revolution on the cannon in Gonzales, “COME AND TAKE IT!”

We will read about the closing of the frontier to expansion of the Texas cattle ranches. We will learn about the continued wars affecting the Texas Indians, the implementation of the Texas Rangers, the expansion of the railroad, how the railroad had an effect not only on the Texas population, but also how it changed the open-range cattle farming community. Also during this time, new technology enables Texas to become an important center of agriculture in the United States.

Science Fair will be very exciting this year. 5th grade Science projects will be judged on Wednesday, February 2. All of the 5th grade students will stay after school that day to set up for Science night. Parents and families will join us in the evening to view all the projects from the whole school and hear the results. 5th grade also runs the cafe to raise money for our trip to the Pines. The more money we raise, the less the trip will cost. Please be generous with your time and contributions to help pay for the trip. There will be information coming home about this.
