Thank goodness the weather has finally cooled off, but our activities in First Grade are heating up!  In what is left of October, we will have the Halloween Carnival  (22nd), the Red Ribbon Week (24th-27th), we will finish the month of the rosary with a Living Rosary on the 26th at 2:00, and  the Halloween parade at 8:15 on the 31st with a Halloween snack in our classroom at 2:30.

In November we will have our All Saints Mass on the 1st with everyone dressing as their patron saint, parent-teacher conferences on the 4th, the Saints Game on the 18th, and a prayer service followed by a primary grades Thanksgiving Feast and early release at 12:00 on the 22nd.  Our Thanksgiving break will be the 23rd – 27th.  Advent will begin on the 27th.

We will cover the following areas of our curriculum.

Math – We have just finished the chapter on addition and will cover the chapter on subtraction.  We will begin an addition Math Minute each Friday.  This  is an ungraded one minute math drill to help the students practice their addition facts.  Later we will add subtraction Math Minutes.

Religion – We will spend the month of November studying Saints that are chosen for the whole school.  After Thanksgiving, we will start studying about Advent and the Christmas season.

Science – We will continue and finish the study of trees and the  seasons of the year.

Social Studies - We will study about the Native Americans, early travelers to America, and symbols of our country.

Language Arts – In phonics we will continue to introduce the letter sounds of the alphabet, work on phonemic awareness, blending, segmentation, and rhyming.  We will begin oral reading tests each Friday using one of the decodable readers we have introduced during the week.  Please continue to read each night and fill out the reading logs.  In grammar we will introduce -ed endings, capitalization, and special nouns.  We will keep reviewing nouns, verbs, and adjectives.  We hope you are enjoying the poetry folders going home on Mondays.  The students will also continue to bring home guided readers on Fridays.

Health – We will talk about drug prevention during Red Ribbon Week, poison prevention, and begin to discuss how to stay healthy.

Pre K3 is moving right along and can’t believe it’s almost time for Thanksgiving ! We have lots to be thankful for in the month of November and top of our list are our awesome parents!
Thank you all for pitching in with the Halloween carnival booth and making the new “Little House of Wacky Hair” a big success!

I’d also like to send a special thank you to “Carpenter Dixon” for taking time out of his busy schedule to share his amazing carpentry talents as our first community helper volunteer! Mr. Dixon, Ms Mendy’s husband, brought us a rectangle, triangle and then actually built a square in our classroom as the children watched in amazement. Every child took a turn at using the electric screwdriver and hammering nails. It was a ton of fun and I must say he will be a hard act to follow! I would also extend the invitation to all of our parents who would like to come to our classroom as a community helper and share with the class what it is you do to help others in our community. If you are interested in volunteering, please email me to schedule a date and time.

Thank you to all of our students who worked so hard to make sacrifices during our “Pennies for the Homeless” class project as part of the school wide “RESPECT LIFE” project.   We learned that as God’s children, it is our Christian responsibility to help others in need, and in doing so, we raised $17.32 for someone less fortunate than ourselves.  This was a valuable project, and I think the class really enjoyed the pride they had when each of them took their turn pouring in their little sack of coins.   The class understands now that through teamwork we can all make a big difference in this world!

As you all know by now you will be receiving more detailed info in my weekly newsletters so here is just a quick overview of our upcoming lessons.

In November we will turn our learning toward our heritage, the first settlers, and expressing ways to be Thankful to those who have helped us and touched our lives in some way. We will begin our lessons on the term “saint” and even learn some very interesting stories about several Saints including St. Elizabeth. We will Be introduced to the letter names and sounds of D,F and S in isolation and as a diagraph when it comes in front of it’s good friend H. We will learn descriptive words for sizing and comparing sizes for example: small, medium, large etc.  We also have some pretty fun thanksgiving projects planned that will put our basic skills to the test with gluing, coloring, cutting, etc.

And I’ve saved the best for last! In studying our heritage and learning that each family has its own heritage, we will have our first In-house field trip! I am excited to announce that a folklore musician will be coming this month to share her own music from her heritage! Please watch the weekly notes for more details on this special field trip!

We will be looking forward to having the Fire Clowns come and put on a special Fire Safety Act for us to wrap up our lessons from October during fire safety month.   The date is not yet confirmed so we’ll send a note in the folders as soon as it is finalized.

Mrs. Mendy and I wish to extend a big THANK YOU to all of you for sharing your precious gifts with us.   We are truly blessed to have these young children in our lives, and we cherish each one of them.   May you have a very safe and blessed Thanksgiving.

Mrs. Porter

We are so thankful that we have a great bunch of kindergartners!  This is what we will be doing this week:

Religion – We will study saints this month!  We will make a book of saints and at the end of the month two kindergartners will participate in the procession of saints at Church.  We will also continues to read and learn about old testament Bible stories.

Language Arts – Our new unit is SHADOWS.  The goals for this unit are: learn more about shadows through books and active experimentation, learn about informational prose and how it differs from narrative, and engage in hands-on activities to see if answers are correct.  We will begin to have homework on letters that we work on in class!  The children are so excited!

Math – Our objectives for this month are: recognize and name numerals 11 -20, count by 10′s to 100, order numerals 1-20 on a number line, count on from numbers other than 1, identify ordinal positions, extend AB patterns, recognize and name rectangle and oval, compare shapes and tell how they are the same and different, and sort objects by shape, color, size, and other attributes. We will continue to create and interpret graphs.

Social Studies – We will learn about the first Thanksgiving and do various activities about Thanksgiving.  We will have a Thanksgiving feast on November 23.

Science – We will continue to investigate ways to keep our bodies healthy. We will also observe our indian corn in water.  What happens?  We will also observe our pumpkin guts in a jar and watch how it decomposes.

Have a great month!

Religion

We will begin learning about the saints over the next few weeks in Religion. We will learn some interesting facts about several saints including feast days, what they are the patron saint of and a few details of their lives. Each student will have the opportunity to present information about a saint they are inspired by in class. We will watch several videos: Mother Teresa, Bernadette, and The Lady of Fatima. Hopefully we will also get to see a video on Juan Diego and the Virgin of Guadalupe if the video becomes available.

Math

We are working to finish up our review of addition and subtraction; estimating and rounding; problem solving strategies and place value. Once we are finished with our review, we will begin working on multiplication math patterns and multiplication properties. This will hopefully be fun, exciting, and challenging for us.

Science

We are learning about the body and how our body systems and organs work. Each student has been assigned an organ or body system that they will research and then will present their findings to the class. They all seem very interested in figuring out just what makes us tick.
