6R ENGLISH—In 6th grade regular we are well into the research paper, having completed the thesis statement and preliminary outline.  The typed copy of the outline is due March 6.  Note cards will be completed in class, approximately 15 per day.  I will collect these and grade every 20 cards.  The students will then begin writing the rough draft, beginning with the introductory paragraph.  This will take us through Easter.  Spelling will include lessons 27, 28, and 29.

7R ENGLISH—Students in regular English just started a unit on adverbs which will include modifiers, clauses, different types (time, place, manner, degree, affirmation, negation), comparison (regular and irregular), and special cases.  The test is scheduled for March 20.  We will then begin a short unit on prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections with the test scheduled for March 28.  Following adverbs, we will then do a short study of antonyms and synonyms.  The final copy packet of the research paper is due March 6.  Spelling for March will include lessons 28, 29, and 31.

7H ENGLISH—We are in the unit on verbs which includes troublesome tenses, subject/verb agreement, compound agreement, gerunds, and infinitives.  The test is scheduled for March 20.  Adverbs will be the next unit which will include modifiers (adjective and adverb), clauses, elliptical clauses, different types (time, place, manner, degree, affirmation, negation), and comparison (regular and irregular).  The test is scheduled for April 3. The final copy packet of the research paper is due March 6.  Spelling for March will include lessons 28, 29, and 31.

8H ENGLISH—We are finishing a long unit on verbs which will include time through tenses (present, past, future, shift), special cases of verbs, mood (indicative, subjunctive, conditional, emphatic, imperative), and the principal parts (present, past, perfect).  The test is scheduled for March 6.  Adverbs are the next unit which will include modifiers, deciding between adjective and adverb, phrases, relative clauses, elliptical clauses, adverb types (time, place, manner, degree, affirmation, negation) and comparison (regular and irregular).  The test is scheduled for April 3.  Spelling for March includes lessons 26 and 27.

6th Grade Regular English—We continue with our study of nouns which will include the nominative case (subject, complement, direct address, appositive), and the possessive case.  The test is scheduled for October 18.  We will then begin a study of pronouns which will include how to recognize, personal pronouns, demonstrative, the subjective case, the objective case, the possessive case, person, number, gender, interrogatives, contractions, distributive, indefinite, and agreement with the subject.  The test is scheduled for November 15.  Adjectives will be the next unit we start but it will conclude into December.  Spelling for October and November will include lessons 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14.

8th Grade Regular English—We are very involved in the research paper. The note cards will be graded 20 cards at a time with all due by October 24.  The five paragraphs will be written in class, one paragraph due per day. If any students fall behind in writing, I suggest they make arrangements to stay with Ms. Johnson after school to catch up. In mid-November, we will begin a unit on nouns which will include collective, compound, common, proper, concrete, abstract, plurals, person, gender, nominative case (subject, complement, direct address, appositive), and possessive case. Spelling for the months of October and November will include lessons 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13.

April/May

6th Grade English—Sixth grade continues with the research paper. The note cards will be completed by April 6th when the rough draft will be started. A specific amount of writing will be required every day to complete the draft on time. The completed rough draft will need to be submitted to turnitin.com (from home) by midnight on May 5. During the last week of April, the students will start diagramming sentences. Spelling for April includes lessons 31, 32, 33, and 34. During May, we will diagram sentences which will include subject, verb, direct object, indirect object, adjective, adverb, appositive, prepositional phrase, and compound sentences. The diagramming test is scheduled for May 13. We will then begin a short unit on capitalization/punctuation which will include end marks, commas, colons, semi-colons, and capitals. The last spelling test will be lesson 35 on May 6.

6th Grade Math—In math, the students have completed the unit on integers and are beginning a short study on order of operations. They will then begin a unit on geometry terms. The students will take notes and draw examples of each term. I will provide a compass, ruler, and protractor during class but the students may want to use their own for homework. The geometry test is scheduled for May 3. In May, we will wrap up the unit on geometry terms and start measurement. This unit will include metrics, customary units, time zone, perimeter, circumference, and area (rectangles, squares, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, circles). The test is scheduled for May 20. The checkbook register will be due on May 20 as well. All the account activities will be posted on the web site on May 17.

8th Grade English—Eighth grade completes the study of adverbs which includes modifiers, clauses, elliptical, time, place, manner, degree, affirmation, negation, regular comparison, and irregular comparison. The test is scheduled for April 13. A short unit on prepositions, conjunctions, interjections (the test scheduled for April 27) will lead us into diagramming sentences. Spelling for the month of April will include lessons 29, 31, and 32. In May, we will diagram sentences which will include subject, verb, direct object, indirect object, adjective, adverb, appositive, prepositional phrase, and compound sentences. 6th Grade English

We continue with the research paper. Notes on every aspect of the paper will be given before any writing takes place. The due dates were sent home in the February 17th letter, but here is a refresher: March 7, the sources are due (at least six); March 10, we will complete the bibliography cards in class; March 21, we will finish the thesis statement in class; and March 25, the typed preliminary outline is due. We will begin work on the note cards on March 23, with ten cards will be due each day. Spelling for March will include lessons 27, 28, and 29.

6th Grade Math

We are studying about percent application which will include finding the percent of a number, finding the rate, calculating discount and sale price, sales tax, the better buy, commission, simple interest, and percent of increase/decrease. This unit is extremely relevant to real world math. The test is scheduled for March 22. For this test (and only this test), I will supply a formula chart and students may use their own calculators.

7th Grade English

We continue the very long unit on verbs. This will include action, linking, helping, agreement, participles, infinitives, regular tenses, irregular tenses, conjugating, subject/verb agreement, compound agreement, and special cases. The test is scheduled for March 29. Spelling for March will include lessons 28, 29, and 31.

8th Grade English

We are well into the study of verbs which will include the principle parts (regular and irregular), the six tenses, progressive form, active form, passive form, special cases, subject/verb agreement, compound agreement, gerunds, and infinitives. The test is scheduled for March 23. We will then start a unit on adverbs before the Sea World trip. Adverbs will continue into April. Spelling for March will include lessons 26, 27, and 28.

6th grade English—We are finishing a unit on adjectives which included articles, proper, possessive, demonstrative, comparative, superlative, numeral, and interrogative. The test is scheduled for December 8. Verbs are our next topic. We will include action, linking, helping, and the four parts (present, present participle, past, past participle). A quiz on helping verbs is scheduled for December 14. This unit will continue into January. Spelling for December includes lessons 15, 16, and 17.

6th grade Math—We have begun the operations of addition and subtraction of fractions. This will include the study of properties (commutative, associative, identity), estimation, mixed numerals, expressions, and problem solving.

7th grade English—We continue with the research paper which is linked to the science fair project. All note cards are due December 6 and we will then write one paragraph per day in class. The rough draft will be due in mid-January. Spelling for December includes lessons 16, 17, and 19.

8th grade English—We continue with the study of nouns which include the possessive case, the objective case (direct object, object of the preposition, appositive, indirect object, adverbials, cognate), and collective, separate, joint nouns. The test is scheduled for December 14. Spelling for December includes lessons 15 and 16.

6TH GRADE ENGLISH—The sixth grade is well into the unit on pronouns.  We continue with the objective case, possessive case, person, number, gender, interrogative, contractions, distributive, indefinite, and agreement.  The test is scheduled for November 16.  We will then begin adjectives (recognizing, articles) but continue this into December.  Spelling for November includes lessons 11, 13, and 14.

6TH GRADE MATH—The study of number theory begins on November 3.  This will include divisibility, prime, composite, factor trees, equivalent fractions, greatest common factor, simplest form, mixed numerals, improper, least common multiple, comparing fractions, ordering fractions, fraction to decimal, decimal to fraction, and problem solving.  The test is scheduled for December 2.

7TH GRADE ENGLISH—We have begun the research paper notes.  The sources are due November 4, and the typed preliminary outline is due November 16.  The students will complete the bibliography cards, thesis, written outline, and note cards in class.  Spelling for November includes lessons 13, 14, and 15.

8TH GRADE ENGLISH—The first part of November will be for the students to write their rough draft.  They will have a specific amount of writing to complete each day.  If they fall behind in their writing, I suggest they stay for tutoring in order to catch up.  The paper must be submitted to turnitin.com by midnight on November 18.  A copy to me is due by November 30.  We will begin a unit on nouns on November 16 which will include identifying, collective, compound, common, proper, concrete, abstract, plurals, person, gender, and the nominative case.  Spelling for November includes lessons 11, 13, and 14.
