Mrs. Schmitz – Third Grade

Math
We are deep in the heart of Multiplication. It is critical that your students recite their multiplication each night when they get home. I know you may think that writing the multiplication facts is just busy work; however, it is critical that each student masters the facts in 3rd grade. I am having them write the facts, recite the facts, and work the facts each day because I want to make sure they will be successful in Math. I am even giving each student an incentive. If your student can memorizes all their multiplication facts by Jan. 11th, they will receive a free movie ticket. Once we finish up with Multiplication and Division, we will begin working with Maps and Graphs. Thank you so much for your help and support at home.
Social Studies
We have finished working in our Junior Atlas for the time being; however, we will come back to it later in the year. We are working on learning about the different types of communities and the people that work to make the community a success. Students will present a mock interview with a worker from the community so we can get a better understanding of all the people that work together to make a community successful.
Science
Students will be working on their science projects in class. Hopefully this will be a fun learning experience for each of the students. They will have the opportunity to learn through trial and error and learn about the Scientific Method. Parents will be invited to come and see their student’s projects during Catholic Schools Week. Students will also be learning about Chemistry. We will learn about the different elements and how to locate information on the Periodic table.
Religion
December
We successfully learned the Ten Commandments and have learned about many great Saints. The students did an awesome job presenting their saints to the class. As we move into the Advent season we will focus on what the season of Advent means within the Christian community. We will hear the story of Jesus birth and the story of how Mary accepted God’s call.
January
We will be taking a deeper look at our Ten Commandments and trying to gain a better understanding of what they mean. What does it mean to love God above everything else? What does obedience have to do with Love? Why go to church each Sunday? What should we do when we break God’s Laws of Love? We will discuss reconciliation and how this brings us closer to God when we have broken his commands.

Tis the season to be thankful, joyful, and try to hang up the stressful!
I hope you all have a very happy and memorable Advent season. May you and yours be filled with many memories to last you until next year. Until we celebrate these very happy times, we have some work to do!
Math: We will continue to work with multiple digit multiplication. We still have not mastered this concept yet and we will continue to work with this until we can recite and work in our sleep. Please make sure that your students are practicing nightly their multiplication facts up to the 12’s as well as a few multiple digit math problems daily. Practice and memorization is key in learning this concept.
Science: We are currently reading and discussing “Matter”. As we move into the months of December and January we will begin discussing and learning about our science projects that we will complete in January. This will be an in class science experiments. Have those kiddo’s begin to search topics. We will use class time to find an experiment to complete. Keep in mind, this is NOT to be completed at home, rather in class.
Social Studies: Oh BOY!!!! We are getting to the best part of Texas History! We are currently discussing the first missions in Texas that were built near Indian villages and the movements of some Native Americans moving into those missions. Next we will begin to discuss the break of Mexico and Spain, followed by the independence of Texas from Mexico. Can we say, ALAMO! Yippee!!!
Reading: We are currently reading Bud, Not Buddy, 4th graders have fallen head over heels for this novel. Please note we are currently in between a few chapters as we are building our comprehension. Note, it is recommended that students feel free to reread chapters and preview others. This will only help them build comprehension. However, if students are doing this, please note, this is not considered their 30 minutes reading time for daily silent reading at home. They are to still be working on another novel at home for their book report that will be completed by the end of the quarter. These book reports will be completed at school for this quarter. I will send more information out as time gets closer. Our next few novel to look at purchasing will be, The Watson’s Go to Birmingham. This novel is by the same author as our currently class novel, Mr. Christopher Paul Curtis.
English: We are currently working on review of subject nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, article adjectives and have just added in prepositions and objects of the prepositions. Please note, even though we test English/ Shurley method on the odd weeks, we will work and review these parts of speech weekly. As time progresses and mastery is made, we will move into the direct and indirect objects and the adjectives that modify them. Please note, testing weeks, I ALWAYS have some type of practice for the kiddos on the website.
Religion: We will begin discussing the Corporal Works of Mercy. This is to prepare for the trip to the nursing home. We are called by Jesus to help those in need. This includes those that are hungry, those that are sick, and clothe those that are naked. Please help us bring some light to the residents of a nursing home we will be visiting on December 12, 2011. We can show our children through our giving how to help those who are less fortunate. Please check the list in the email that was sent out on November 21. Any way that you can help will be very appreciated. I will try to post a list of items we need for the nursing home on the website.
Important Information: The website is up and running and is a great resource for many things while at home. Homework is posted, spelling words, social studies notes for the full chapter, shurley questions, shurley practice, etc. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, check it out.
It is there to help you!

Mrs. Fabian – Third Grade
Posted on September 29, 2010, by Betty Fabian, under Third Grade.
I want to welcome back all the students to St. E’s. We got off to a good start for our third grade class. I enjoyed learning about each student through the “Read all About Me”. The following is classroom information by subject for the upcoming months. On the Scholastic class web page you can find daily updates.
Social Studies - Our Community – this unit will include culture, geography, location, and life. Chapter 1 test was on September 21. It continued (Chapter 2) with rural, suburban, urban, and the big city. Students are working on the 1st semester project in the class room. They will be finished by October 11, 2010.
Science - Third grade is using the Nancy Larson science lessons. The first unit consists of the Solar System; the sun, moon, and phases of the moon. This unit test was on September 29,2010.
Religion – The first unit in our books was a review of 2nd grade, God Calls Us to Faith. For the next couple of weeks we will be saying the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. During this time we will be learning some of the prayers we say for the rosary plus some extras. We will also act out some of the parts of this mystery.
Math - We finished place value and are working our way up to “Multiplication”. But we will review addition and subtraction (with grouping, regrouping, & rounding).
Grammar - For the next month we will review all of the parts of speech. Through creative writing, the students will work on sentence structure.
Language Arts – For the last two weeks the students have been in guided reading groups. Each group has read a different book while learning how to complete a story map. I included vocabulary from within each book to increase vocabulary skills for each group. They completed each book with a unit quiz. For the last day, each group will present the book they read to the class by a short skit, rap song, comic strip, and puppet play.
Reading Counts – we are still working out the kinks. Please be patient.
Book Reports – 1st quarter will be any mystery at least 60 pages of the students choice. Due date will be; 10/18/10.
In October I am planning to get a Readers’ Theater program started in the classroom. Watch for more details to come.

We have been working to learn the Ten Commandments and how they apply to our daily lives. We are now working on Saint Projects and learning about the saints. We will reflect on the lives of the saints and how we should model our lives after them. As we enter the Thanksgiving season we will also take time to reflect on the blessings in our lives and what we are thankful for in our daily lives.
Math
We are working on our multiplication facts and working multiplication problems each day. The student’s have been working on knowing their multiplication facts by memory. We are now working on double digit multiplication and will soon be moving on to division problems.

Ms. Vercillo – Fifth Grade
Posted on November 11, 2009, by Beth Vercillo, under Fifth Grade.
I would like to thank everyone that donated items and their precious time for the fall carnival! St. Elizabeth parents are the best! A good time was had by all. It’s hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner. Just a few reminders:
Students need a binder to keep all their papers. This will help them be ready for middle school.
Mad minute tests are every week. We will begin fractions in a few weeks and students must know their facts cold!
All announcements, tests, projects, homework, and more are on my web site. Please check it with your child daily!
Reading logs need to be signed nightly. Reading Counts tests begin 3rd quarter.
Language Arts
We are in the middle of our second novel, Loser by Jerry Spinelli. The students have really been enjoying it! We will do a three dimensional book report when we finish the book. Watch for details on the web site. We learned the 49 prepositions and are moving on to the 23 helping verbs. We have also studied the correct use of quotation marks, article adjectives and the use of me and I in a sentence. Our next novel will be Where the Red Fern Grows.
Math
We are finishing up our unit on division and will be moving on to fractions! Remember tutoring is on Tuesdays and Thursdays if your child needs help in Math or Language Arts. Parents are always welcome to attend tutoring sessions in order to better assist the kids at home. A few kids are still having a difficult time with their multiplication facts. Please use flashcards at home!
Religion
November is the moth we study saints. By now all of you have seen the Saint Project directions. I included a rubric so that my grading procedures would be clear. The kids are enthusiastic about learning as much as they can about their saint. I can’t wait to see projects and hear the children’s presentations. In December, the fifth grade will host The Jesse Tree Service. It is scheduled on Dec.18th at 9:00 am. Please arrange your schedule early you won’t want to miss it.
I look forward to visiting with you at parent conferences!
