As the 2011-2012 school year comes to an end, I would like to thank the following library volunteers:  Linda Armijo, Marybeth Jones, Delilah Macias, Amy Solis and Euranie Williams.  My sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to St. Elizabeth organizations, students, parents, grandparents and all the Book Fair volunteers who have contributed so much energy, endless work and invaluable time to the library and its many activities.  Thanks to everyone who donated books and supplies.  This school year was a success because of great teamwork and constant support throughout the year.

One quick reminder:  All library books must be returned and late fees must be paid before the end of the year to receive final report cards.  This year, the library offered an amnesty week and many students took advantage of the opportunity to settle library overdue materials and outstanding fines.

Students who participated in the Six Flags Reading Program will receive their free admission ticket in the last report card envelope mailed in June.

A suggested reading list will be available in the library after May 30.

The library accepts book donations of AR, Reading Counts, and Blue Bonnet books that students have finished reading.  We welcome books in good condition and accept all titles.

This has been such a fantastic year!!  I’m looking forward to next year.  Have a great summer.

A special thanks to parents who dropped by the library during the recent Parent-Teacher Conference day!  I enjoyed meeting and talking with both new and veteran parents.

Library activities and studies during December will revolve around Advent and Christmas.  PK and Kinder students will enjoy Christmas and holiday storytelling.  4th and 5th grade class activities and library studies will revolve around Christmas traditions and festivities from around the world.  As we celebrate this season of Advent and prepare for the Birth of Jesus, the students will research how Christmas joy takes many forms around the world.

January will be a busy month in the library.  As the library prepares for Catholic Schools Week and Open House, new books will be processed and will be placed on the shelves for students’ reading pleasure.  Students in Kinder and 1st grade will be able to take their library books home for the first time.  They will share their reading experience with other students when they give a brief book review on the book they took home for the first time.  2nd and 3rd grade students will study fairy tales, legends and tall tales.  4th & 5th grades will learn the fundamentals of the Dewey Decimal System.

January is also Science Fair time.  A friendly reminder:  the library has numerous books, reference materials and project ideas for students to use when setting up their science projects. The library is an excellent source for research, including internet access and is open for their extended use before school, during recess, and after school.  Please encourage your student to make use of the library and its resources.

BOOK FAIR NEWS

To the Book Fair and Beyond: Reading is Out of This World!  Prepare to Blast Off – attend the library’s Annual Fall Book Fair, December 2-9.    Exciting and fun activities such as door prizes, raffles, contests, guessing games, and book scavenger hunts are planned.  The fair is a great opportunity for the library to add to its collection, grant teacher’s book wishes and serves as the major fundraiser for our library.

It’s about children, it’s about books and it’s about having fun.  From award winners and bestsellers to picture books and favorite series, the Book Fair is filled with hundreds of books that will take your student on adventures they will never forget.  Shop the fair for Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers.

If interested in volunteering your time and energy, we’d love to have you join in on the fun!  It’s a great fun way to earn those volunteer hours and get a 10% discount on your purchases.  Please e-mail Monica Connelly at mconnelly@saintspride.com to volunteer for the Book Fair.  The children would love to have you!

See you at the Book Fair!!

Thanks for your continued support and for letting me share my love of reading with your children. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year.

Welcome!

A new school year always brings excitement to the library.  The first two weeks were spent welcoming all students, getting to know new students and presenting library procedures.

Once again the library will be open before school 7:30-7:50, during recess and after school 3:30-4:00 for student use.  There are 8 computers with internet access, as well as access to the Dallas Public Library Periodicals for research and the Dallas Morning Newspaper.  Students may take AR and Reading Counts tests on library computers, and research science articles.

During the month of September, library class activities will include checking out books, storytelling, learning how books are placed on library shelves, identifying authors, illustrators, publishers, title and copyright dates, and how to distinguish between fiction, biography, and non-fiction books.

September is:

  • Library Card Sign-up Month
  • September 6 – Read a Book Day
  • Hispanic Heritage Month

Welcome back to returning and new library volunteers, who come and volunteer every week in the library:  Amy Solis, Pilar Dominguez, Euranie Williams, and Norma Gurrola.  The library is a success because of these wonderful, dedicated volunteers.  If anyone is interested in helping achieve our goals in the library, have some free time, and love working with children and books, come on in and volunteer.  If reading to children is your talent, we could use you as well.  It’s a fun way to earn volunteer hours.  Contact me at mconnelly@saintspride.com if you are interested.

Through the generosity of the Goza family and Georgine Guerrero, the library has added many new books to its collection.

Many fun-filled activities and events are planned for this Fall:

It is unbelievable how fast the school year “whizzed by” and as it draws to a close, I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to our many library supporters, St. Elizabeth organizations, students, and parents.  I would especially like to thank Book Fair volunteers who contributed so much energy, endless work and invaluable time.  This library school year was a success because of great teamwork and constant support; everyone working together for the good of the library.

Debbie Gleason – Thanks for the memories!  All of us here at St. Elizabeth, especially me and the library, will miss seeing your smiling face.  If you are ever in the neighborhood, drop by and say HI!

All library books must be returned and library fines paid by June 1st.

Also, the library is once again accepting donations of any AR or Reading Counts books that your child has finished reading.  We welcome books in good condition and appreciate all titles.

This has been a fantastic year!  I’m looking forward to next year already.  Have a great summer!

The Littlest Saints

The newest little SAINTS have amazed me at how quickly they have all adjusted to their new school and routines.  They even adjusted well in the beginning as we kept gathering more, and more friends as the days went on.  Mrs. Mendy has been a true blessing to have and a wonderful help in keeping me sane!   I want to share with you that I have heard over, and over again from parents about how important it has been for their own children to have experienced our preschool programs here at St. Elizabeth.   MANY parents have stopped me to say they are so grateful that they had sent their own children through the pre-kindergarten programs and what a true difference it has made for their own son or daughter in their classes as they get older.  I thought I’d share this with you just in case you were wondering if the sacrifices you make everyday to send your child to a Catholic school is worth it, the answer from MANY others is “YES!” and I hope to prove to you the same by the end of the school year!   I wish to welcome all of you, both children and parents, and am proud to say that this class will be a great asset to the St. Elizabeth community!

Our first 6 weeks have been spent meeting new friends, getting familiar with the new school and for many, this is their first time away from mommy and daddy on a regular basis.  The students are coming together as a whole group, and it is exciting to watch the little friendships forming as they learn to share and cooperate with their peers through play and activities.   As a group we are learning about the basic tools used in a classroom to help make our learning fun and exciting.   We are learning to use writing tools, paintbrushes, the SMART board and many classroom manipulatives to learn and explore the skills needed for pre kindergarten.

In October we will look forward to studying community helpers, become aware of fire safety month, and will use all our basic skills to create some exciting Halloween activities!   The class will continue exploring the world around them and simply become aware of all the many things that God has given us.   We will continue practicing our coloring skills, listening skills, and exploration of the colors, and shapes.   We will begin our very basic lessons on the alphabet and learn that letters are used for writing and spelling, and numbers are used for counting.   The class will discover that the letters all have a name and a sound and will begin a basic understanding that letters can be picked from the alphabet tree, rearranged and pushed together to create words for reading!   (Yes, we have to get pretty basic here, folks!)

We will continue exploring through fun art, music, and physical activities that give them a love for school, coming to understand that learning is fun and exciting!

Parents, remember to watch for your weekly class newsletter for specific details of the week, and please use the information I send to reinforce these skills at home.   As I mentioned at Open House, we are building a learning bridge between home and school that will lengthen over time with every grade level, so now is the time to work hard on building a solid foundation for each student.

Please keep you fingers crossed for some cooler weather so we can get outside more to broaden our exploration in nature!   Thanks to each of you for sharing your most prized possession with me, I am blessed to have each of you in my life!

Happy Fall, Everyone!

Mrs. Porter

Art

Pre- Kinder and Kindergarten students in Mrs. Powell’s Art class talked about the different kinds of lines and the names that go along with them. They talked about zig zag, wavy, and straight lines.  Mrs. Powell gave them a type of line and a direction and the students had to draw that line, and then switch to a new color to get ready for the next line.  We will continue with using the concepts of lines for the first quarter.  This will include shapes, pictures, nature-anywhere we find lines.  Mrs. Powell has enjoyed your children and is excited about the many projects the Pre-Kinder and Kindergarten Artists will create!

Library

In Library with Mrs. Connelly, the students are learning the appropriate way to handle and use books with care.   They are also enjoying the many books of the library and we will soon be making our very own library cards to be used back in our own classroom.

Computer

In computer with Mrs. Step, the students have been introduced to some alphabet games using the SMART board and each visit, they are using a computer with headphones to play and practice the game individually.

Spanish

In Mrs. B’s Spanish class the students are enjoying the songs as they learn to count in Espanol and dancing to the Chicken Dance!   They are also working on their colors in Espanol just like we are in English!

Our Littlest Saints are growing up quickly!

The new 2009-2010 school year has started really well.  The students all seem excited and ready to explore new library activities.  September is especially busy.  Many fun-filled activities and events are planned for this year. Fall activities include:

  • Birthday Book Club (parents may honor their child’s birthday with a book donation)
  • Teen Read Week – October 19-23
  • Scholastic Fall Book Fair – December 6-13

The first library classes have been spent welcoming back old students and getting to know new students, along with reviewing library procedures and expectations.  This month PK and Kinder students enjoy storytelling and learning the parts of a book from cover to cover.  1st grade is learning the proper care of library books as they prepare to check out books to read in their classrooms.  2nd and 3rd grade students will investigate fiction, non-fiction and biography books.

Please check the library website for library information, upcoming activities, and reference information. My web page also includes links to homework help, reference and educational games links.  All overdue library notices will be sent via RenWeb.

Welcome back to library volunteers Debbie Gleason, Gary Cervenka, Priscilla Romero, and Amy Solis, as well as to our new library volunteer, Veronica Mendoza. The school library is a success because of these wonderful, dedicated volunteers.  If anyone is interested in helping achieve our goals in the library, have some free time, and love working with children and books, come on in and volunteer.  If reading to children is your talent, we could use you as well.  Library work is a fun way to earn volunteer hours.  Parents can contact me through my e-mail address: mconnelly@saintspride.com.
