PreK-3:  This quarter we will be concentrating on body parts and clothing, learning new songs to help us identify body parts.  We will continue to practice our basics of ABC’s,  phonics, vowels, numbers, days of the week, and colors.

PreK-4: We are doing great on our basics and sounding out small words in Spanish from our mini phonic books. We have started the body parts unit

1st:  We have started this quarter with new vocabulary of all the nouns that make up a house.  This will be broken down into each room in the house and the furniture or appliances that it contains. Students are sounding out each word and reading.   It is awesome!

2nd: We have started on the clothing unit.  We will be dressing up dolls and cowboys, as we name each clothing article.  I will combine the item of clothing with identifying the article for each noun.

3rd. We did great on our first quiz on clothing.  We will be building small sentences with each clothing word.   We will identify the articles, nouns and adjectives.

4th. Lesson 3 covers reading a calendar and naming all the places that we visit, emphasizing questions and answering in complete sentence.  Students will also be using today, tomorrow, this week and next week.  We will also learn about the preposition “TO” and the verb (to go) in the present. We are learning much grammar in this chapter, so please make sure your child studies what we cover in class!

5th. It seems that 5A will be missing Spanish since they will be attending the dance class at that time.  5B will be moving on to lesson 7 which has to do with the verb TENER (to have) and feelings.  We will be asking  and answering each other in complete sentences.  We will be conjugating the verb with all the pronouns.  We will also learn about the difference of USTED and TU in Spanish as well as identifying who has what using the verb TENER. I will also combine body parts with the verb tener.

6th. During this quarter we will learn about AR, ER and IR verbs and its conjugations in the present and all regular verbs.   We will also be identifying and writing negative and affirmative sentences, using personal names instead of personal pronouns to conjugate.  Most important, they will be expanding their vocabulary, reading and translating as we read.

7th. We have drill through AR, ER and IR verbs, so it is time to concentrate on some irregular verbs. Lesson 14 offers us the verb HACER (To do or make), weather expressions and seasons. We will be using the verb hacer to express the weather in each season.  We will be asking questions and answering in complete sentence. We will be conjugating the verb, hacer, in the present tense.

8th. This quarter we will be concentrating on irregular verbs, learning the conjugations and applying them correctly with our vocabulary.  Our new vocabulary will include clothes, body parts, countries, nationalities, languages, and animals.  We will also learn about the demonstrative adjectives and more possessive adjectives.

Pre K3/K4 – It is always a delight to have this bunch.  K3 is working hard on colors, numbers, days of the week and our new song about chocolate.  They love to sing and move around.  Our next unit will be about the body parts so we will be learning a new song which names all the body parts as we move and dance. Our next unit is family.  We will be learning family names, identifying and drawing our families. I will incorporate Thanksgiving with family. In December we will be learning about Christmas in Mexico, and we will have hot chocolate with Mexican bread.

K4 – Wow! if you have not heard them introduce themselves, please ask them. Your child will tell you his/her name, age, gender and a good bye.   The children sound beautiful and love doing it. They also love to do the ABC’s and of course the vowels.  Our next unit is family.  We will be learning family names, identifying and drawing our families. I will incorporate Thanksgiving with family. In December we will be learning about Christmas in Mexico, and we will have hot chocolate with Mexican bread.

1st. Grade – We are in the school unit.  We have been learning about gender, articles, school supplies, people in the school and places around in the school. This is a long unit so we will be in this unit all the way to December.

2nd. Grade – They have been working hard on the verb ESTAR (to be – used as temporary condition or location). The verb ESTAR was used with all the personal pronouns.  We have also learned feelings – they had a lot of fun with acting and a guessing game.   After having so much fun with this; I then combined the verb ESTAR with the feelings.  They love it and so do I! We are now learning about professions and this will be combined with the verb SER (to be) used as a permanent characteristic.  In December we will be learning new vocabulary as we celebrate Christmas in Mexico with hot chocolate and Mexican bread.

3rd. Grade – We have been learning about GENDER and sentence structure.  Article, noun, adjective and how the adjectives have to agree with the noun in number and in gender. We are learning the names of farm animals and developing simple sentences using adjectives. For December we will talk and watch a movie on Celebrating Christmas in Hispanic Countries.

4th. Grade – Asking and answering questions using animal’s names, shapes and adjectives; answering affirmatively as well as negative.  We will move on to lesson 3, which has to do with mastering the days of the week, talking about going places using the verb IR (to go) in the present, and what you do in different days of the week by reading a calendar.

5th. Grade – We just finished lesson 6 and learned to read dates, learned to conjugate the verb GUSTAR (to like), weather nouns and weather adjectives.  It is nice when we can put it all together to have a little conversation.  We also reviewed AR verbs conjugations. We will be moving on to talking about feelings, expressing them and asking using tu and usted. We will also be studying the verb TENER (to have) and its conjugations.

6th , 7th and 8th grade will also be researching  Christmas in Hispanic Countries.

6th. Grade – We finished learning about the difference of two articles indefinite and indefinite and when to use each, reading and translating a story as well as each exercise we do.  The next lesson has to do with AR verbs, and it will be a review since we know how to do it.  We will be learning new vocabulary as we learn more AR verbs.

7th Grade – We are working on lesson 10, IR verbs in the present (regular as well as irregulars). We will be working on this unit since it has been a bit challenging to most of the students.  We will be writing, reading, and translating with IR verbs.

8th. Grade – Numbers, numbers and more numbers!  Learning the hundreds, thousands and millions.  Constructing problems, reading them and writing them.  We are now working with the verb IR (to go), learning new vocabulary and using the verb to go in the present.  We are reading and translating as well as doing comprehension questions about the story.  We will be studying one or two verbs at a time and using them in different ways to learn the meanings, conjugations and when and how to use them.

Spanish – Mrs. Barrientos

¿Qué está pasando en Español? What is happening in Spanish?

PreK- 3 and 4: Learning through songs and body movements.  We learn the ABC’s names and sounds of each letter, colors, numbers, and days of the week.  We love to dance the chicken dance and chocolate song.

Kinder:  We also enjoy the songs and much needed body movements, but we also concentrate on the ABC phonics.  We work on mini-books that provide words that start with a specific letter and we repeat and learn the names of the pictures.  We also concentrate on practicing writing the color names, clapping to break them into syllables, and more oral practice.  We can also introduce ourselves with a greeting, our name, our age and a good bye. It is wonderful to hear them!

1st. grade:    We have been working hard on mastering the colors and our most challenged calendar with the new concept of today, tomorrow, and yesterday.    I have to say that after a little frustration, we loved it and wanted to keep solving the question of “If today is Lunes, what day will it be tomorrow?” We have also covered shapes, which will be part of our everyday review on basics as well as “today, tomorrow and yesterday.”  We are now learning family names. The students are drawing their immediate families and writing their family names. It is nice to see their love for their families. We are concentrating on learning to read small words in Spanish.

2nd. Grade:  They are learning about gender and the definite articles.  We are mastering personal pronouns and will be reading and translating simple sentences using all kinds of verbs. I will reinforce the verbs, along with the meaning and conjugation, but our focus will remain on the personal pronouns.  We will continue to study verbs and personal pronouns up until December.

3rd. Grade:  3rd. grade is working hard on mastering to read the calendar by asking and answering in complete sentences, all in Spanish.  They are also mastering the concept of “today, tomorrow and yesterday.”   We are also learning animal names and forming simple sentences using adjectives and some ar verbs from our conjugation charts in the back on the book.

4th. Grade:  4th grade is learning new vocabulary about school supplies and people in the school by asking and answering in complete sentences.  They are also learning the difference between definite and indefinite articles, and reviewing the use of the verb tener (to have) to ask questions using school and classroom vocabulary.  They are also mastering the rules to make nouns plural.

5th. Grade:  5th grade has been reviewing vocabulary, articles, nouns, rules to make nouns plural and sentence structure.  We are now in lesson 5, which has to do with weather.  Students are learning about seasons and the different kinds of weather.  They will be using the verb GUSTAR (to like) and the correct conjugations as well as descriptive words to express what types of weather they like and what they do not like.

6th. Grade:  6th grade had some awesome family projects!  Thank you parents for your support!  In this lesson, we did not only master family names but also sentence structure, conjugating correctly, making the necessary changes for plurals and writing descriptive sentences.  We will be spending some more time on describing and making sure that our nouns go hand in hand with our adjectives in gender, as well as in number.

7th Grade:  This grade has been learning about the verb “To Be” (SER and ESTAR). We have finished the verb SER and will continue what we have started on the verb ESTAR.  We will than focus on exercises in which we have to differentiate between which of the two to use.   It is a little challenging but not impossible, so please make sure that your children are studying at least 10 minutes per day.

8th Grade:  We had fun describing what things are around the outside of our homes by writing a paragraph about it using common prepositions.  I am happy with the students’ compositions and their reading in Spanish.  It is always reviewing time in Spanish when we come to something that needs to be reviewed.  We will continue to write and translate as much as we can by using different verbs and learning new vocabulary.

During the month of November, we will be learning about “The Day of the Dead” in Hispanic countries by watching and reading documentaries and doing a variety of activities.

Bienvenidos! Welcome to another year of fun learning at St. Elizabeth Catholic School.

Pre K – 3rd. grade have been concentrating on greetings and goodbyes as well as practicing our cultural dance which we performed at the Church’s Jamaica on Sat. Sept. 17 at 6:16 p.m.  This was a fun way of introducing a bit of the Hispanic culture with dances, food and fun!  Thanks for coming to support the Guadalupanas in this event.

4th grade:  We are concentrating on formal introductions and reviewing our past lessons, so that we are  able to make connections with past learned material and that which is new to come.

5th grade:  We will continue to review until we are able to retrieve the information.  It just takes re-enforcement and practice.  We will be using the same text and workbook as last year.

6th grade: We did a quick review, and we will be moving a little slow to give the students some time to catch their breath with all the new information and routines.  We have done our first lesson together in our new books.

7th grade: We are still reviewing but doing beautifully.  We will be looking at specific verbs, one at a time with the correct conjugation and using in combination with other verbs.

8th grade: is taking a three to four sentence dictation in Spanish and translating it into English every time they come to Spanish.    I have been very satisfied with their work.  We had a really fast review, and it seems like the students have retained the information and with flying colors. We are now ready to pick up where we left off last year and hopefully move faster to our second book.

The month of May is one of the most exciting months in Spanish.  It is the month in which we learn and we eat.  Staying focused is a little challenging during the last month of school, so I have always done the food unit last and it is so much fun!  We are all learning foods in different levels:

Pre-K 3:  We have been learning the names of bananas, apples, grapes and oranges.  We will be tasting this week.

Pre –K 4:  We are identifying at least 5 fruits by name, color and shape: sandia, manzana, platano, uvas and pina.

Kindergarten:  Identifying fruits by name, color and shape, ice cream and bread

1st Grade: Identifying fruits, ice cream, bread and some vegetables.  We also identified the  articles el/la.

2nd Grade:  Identifying fruits, ice cream, bread and some vegetables.  We also identified the articles el/la, singulars and plurals.

3rd Grade: We made a delicious fruit salad and identified each fruit, tostadas, helado y torta.  We had at least one food from each group in the pyramid.

4th Grade:  We made a delicious green salad, fruit salad and identified each fruit and vegetable, chicken, fajitas, and homemade flour tortillas.

5th Grade:  We are learning about food but also condiments, measurements, table setting and other important words. We are translating the ingredients of a recipe.

6th Grade:  Reviewing food, condiments, measurements, table setting, and the verb gustar (to like) in the singular and plural form.  The students are bringing their favorite dish and explaining the ingredients;  Using the verb gustar; they will be explaining why it is like that particular dish.

7th Grade: Reviewing food, condiments, measurements,  table setting.  Students are translating a recipe and procedures to be a able to present orally and then to taste.

8th Grade: ADIOS! It has been a pleasure seeing you grow not only in physically but also in your inner selves.  You are wonderful young people and will do well where ever you go.  Thank you for letting me be part of your lives here at St. Elizabeth.

Thank you for another year and have a safe summer.

PK3– 4 – We are having fun pretending to be the teacher and teaching songs to the class.  It is fun! We will be moving on to fruits for the remainder of the year.  I will be asking each individual student to bring a specific fruit, enough to share with the rest of the class.  We will be learning the name of the fruit but we will also learn the senses (touch, smell, taste), and if there is something to count we will also add it in.  We will then enjoy it.

Kinder- I have been enjoying Kinder in Art.  We had a lot of fun on our canvas for the silent auction, it is just too cute. In Spanish, we will be concentrating on the rest of the alphabet phonics, fruit, and three vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers).

1stWow! We are almost finished with our Spanish book, and right now we are learning all about the different rooms that make up a house and furniture; we will also be moving on to foods.  We will cover fruits and vegetables next and combine them with colors, numbers, shapes and senses.

2ndWe are using actions verbs and practicing conjugating in the present, but we are so engaged and having so much fun that it is easy.  The students are also writing complete sentences, reading and translating them as well.

3rdWe are learning all kinds of grammar which we are putting together to conjugate, describe, demand, ask, make negative and affirmative questions.  They are also answering in complete sentences, reading and translating.

4thWe are having fun with our AR verbs and learning to put them into sentences making the change from a personal name to a pronoun and vice versa.  We are making changes from statements to questions. We are answering negatively as well as affirmatively.

5thWe just finished unit 7 and we are three units away from finishing the book. We learned the verb tener (to have) and used it with needs to express what we are experiencing as well as to say our age and to ask and answer questions. We also mastered the use of the pronouns USTED and TU (very important in Spanish).

6thWe are moving slowly but surely, there is much grammar to learn, and conjugating verbs is very difficult for some, so we have to concentrate on conjugating the three different types of verbs AR, ER and IR verbs in the present.

7th/8thThese grade levels are doing extremely well! We are mastering to conjugate, making sentences plural/singular, making questions from statements, answering negatively as well as affirmatively.  We will also be learning some irregular verbs and many, many AR, ER and IR verbs in the present.

PK-3: They have made tremendous progress and they continue to learn.  We have much fun singing “Aturi-ta, Aturi-ta” and naming our body parts, but we should now move on to learning articles of clothing.  We will orally identify what we wear.

PK-4: We enjoy coming and pronouncing all the words; we are especially proud of our phonics and the alphabet.  The children really get tickled when they identify the picture of the letter and say “I did it!, Mrs. B”.  They also enjoy singing away to the body parts and now to articles of clothing. We will identify what we are wearing and combine that with colors. Tengo un calcetin rojo. (I have a red sock.)

Kinder:  Wow! We are practicing to write.  We just finished our unit on body parts with a mini-book in which some body parts were identified, and they wrote the Spanish word three times each.  We love to sing and learn.  We will identify what we are wearing  and combine them with colors and body parts.

Tengo un calcetin rojo en el pie. (I have a red sock on my foot.)

1st Grade: First grade is writing and practicing to read in Spanish.  They enjoyed the family, body parts and clothing unit.  We will be concentrating on school supplies, places in the school as well as the people that work in the school.  We are concentrating on the articles and nouns.

2nd Grade: In second grade we are having fun learning about prepositional phrases, personal pronouns and some verbs.  These are very important as they will play a big part in sentence structure in third grade.  We will be moving on to saying time (to the exact hour and half hour)

3rd Grade: We continue to practice writing sentences and practicing our verbs.   We will concentrate on sea animals and will describe how they look and what they do using action verbs.

4th Grade: We continue to work on our body parts by using them in sentences.  The students worked hard on their body parts test and the grades were awesome.  We will concentrate on AR verbs and their conjugations.

5th Grade: They just started to work on a written review from lesson 4-6.  It is amazing how much grammar the students have learned.  This will count as a test grade.  Our next lesson in our texts will be the one which has to do with expressing our feelings and our needs using the verb tener (to have).

6th Grade: We are concentrating on ER verbs, making sentences singular/plural making all the necessary changes within the sentence structure and verb conjugations.  Body parts will be our next lesson and will be combined with some ER verbs.

7/8th Grade: Well, our seventh graders have caught up with eight grade and we are now on the same page. Our verbs SER /ESTAR were a little challenging but we learned the concepts of each and the rules to know when to use them.  We just had a test over lesson 14: seasons, months, weather and the verb HACER (to make).  Our next job is to learn some IR verbs, their conjugations in the present and how to use them.

PK 3 – We are having a blast learning the basics of Spanish with all kinds of body movements and songs. The kids’ nice hugs and big smiles always make my day! We will be concentrating on body parts this quarter.

PK 4 – This bunch is full of energy so it is always fun to have them ready to go.  We are mastering some of the basics.  The little ones love to clap while we pronounce the words; they think it is fun but we are actually breaking the word into syllables.

Kinder - While we do body movements and songs, we are really concentrating on phonics.  It is imperative to learn the alphabet and the sound that each letter makes.  They are exceptional students, and work very hard.  We will also be concentrating on body parts and learning new songs in which we name the body parts as we dance.

1st – We enjoyed labeling all the face body parts on Santa.  We will continue to concentrate on body parts as well as clothing articles.

2nd – Drawing Santa and identifying his clothing articles and body parts was a blast!  The 2nd graders really, really enjoyed this activity as they also learned and practice writing.  Body parts and clothing will be the two areas for concentration this quarter in addition to learning about articles and adjectives.

3rd- There are many verbs to be learned in third grade.  We are moving slowly because I like to combine things instead of just focusing on learning verbs.  We are learning the personal pronouns, AR verbs and the conjugations in the present tense(this alone is a hard concept).  We will concentrate on some verbs that we can use with clothing and body parts.

4thWe are concentrating on writing the numbers correctly 1-50, so that we are prepared to learn how to say time.  We are also starting lesson 3, which has to do with the days of the week, months and reading a calendar.  Our written exercises consist of reading the questions, answering the questions all in Spanish and translating into English.

5thWe will start the year using two or three different grammar principles in a sentence.  I will use clothing articles as well as body parts to do this unit.  The 5th graders are mastering the concepts of grammar usage in Spanish, and they make my day when they really think outside the box and relate to material that we learned last year.

6thThis is a grade that seems very confident, and they are all doing well.  The students do need to develop the attitude of dedicating some time to studying the notes and to practicing what we are working on for at least 15 min. every night. We have started the year with learning to say time in Spanish.  We have learned the rules and how to say time to the exact hour, time after, and time til’ with oral exercises.  We will be working on our workbook exercises, and then have a lesson test on saying time.

Thank you for all your love, prayers and gifts for me and my family during the Holidays.  May this new year bring you health, prosperity and more love.

PreK3 & 4  and Kinder are doing very well, but every  other grade has new material to learn; so please make sure your child studies for at least 10 minutes daily.  There is a tremendous amount of grammar concepts to learn. Thank you in advanced for your help.

PreK – 3:

We are an energetic group of little people who love to sing, dance and learn.  We are having fun learning the alphabet by name and sound, the vowels, counting to 10, colors and days of the week with songs and body movements.

PreK – 4:

Some of us already know the Spanish routine, and the children keep me in line with the material that we have to learn. We learn with music and body movements as well and cover all the Spanish basics:  alphabet by name and sound, vowels, counting to 20, colors, and  days of the week.  We are concentrating on decoding the colors. The pre-kinders are doing a wonderful job.

Kinder:

Some students in this group have mastered some of the basics, and we can now decode and clap words to put them together. We continue to concentrate on the phonics of the alphabet, but the students also enjoy the songs and body movements, but with a few more expectations.

1st Grade:

Our main objective in first grade is to retain the basics but to also expand our vocabulary  and practice sounding out and writing the words.  We started with colors and  numbers and have moved on to shapes. We are breaking the shape names into syllables, and practicing reading the names. We will also be cutting our own shapes, naming them and making them into funny faces.

2nd Grade:

We are learning about occupations and what we want to be when we grow up. I am very proud of them because the students can now break the long names into syllables and  put them together to read the Spanish words. We will also be learning about the places in the community where all these people with all different occupations work.

3rd Grade:

Third grade is learning to read charts of conjugated AR verbs to use with different other things in the book.  We are learning about all kinds of animals, so we will be combining AR verbs with animals to form sentences. We are also writing descriptive sentences with all kinds of adjectives.

4th Grade:

We are starting unit one, which has to do with classroom supplies, school supplies, school personnel and the two articles: definite and indefinite.  We will also be  learning how to make nouns plural by following our three rules and answering questions using (cuantos, cuantas) how many.

5th Grade:

Finished us lesson 4, which has to do with classroom supplies and school personnel as well as the different classes and ar verbs to express what we do in each class.  We also asked questions and answer the questions in complete sentences using the verbs hacer (to make) and ir (to go). We will be learning weather and weather adjectives with the verb ESTAR (to be), and hacer (to make).

6th Grade:

We are refreshing our minds about AR verbs and its conjugations. We are reading  and translating sentences, we are learning ways to retain the conjugations without a chart. We will be working with AR verbs in many ways for a while.  Our next step is to start writing sentences with each AR verb using peoples names instead of  pronouns.

7th Grade:

We just finished mastering AR conjugations in the present with regular as well as with irregular verbs, translating sentences, answering questions in complete sentence  making all the necessary changes.  We are now moving on to ER verbs.

8th Grade:

Eighth grade is reading, translating and learning new advanced grammar to expand their vocabulary.  We have been introducing the indirect object, direct object and reflexive object. We are reading stories and answering questions pertaining to the story in complete sentences.

Kindergarten: We concentrate on the ABC’s phonics but we keep working hard on all the Spanish basics as well.  Our introductions have expanded from saying just the name to adding the age.  We have been dancing La RASPA.

1st Grade: We have not yet received out books.  Apparently, they are on back order status because they are so popular, but I will be making copies for them until we receive them.  We will be concentrating on practicing writing the basics, so that we can become familiar with decoding and sound out the words.  We did great on our introductions, and they had lots of fun dancing La Vivora de la Mar for the Jamaica.

2nd Grade: Our books are on back order status, so I will be making copies of the different things we will be working on.  We will practice writing, decoding and sounding out to start reading. We have been working on greetings, introductions and goodbyes.  We will be moving on to personal pronouns.

4th Grade: Concentrating on writing and pronunciation of greetings, introductions and goodbyes.  We have learned about how to determine gender and apply it to identify the definite articles. We will be using classroom supplies vocabulary to reinforce what we have learned as well as the indefinite articles.

5th grade: Our review has ended so we are moving to new and fresh materials.  We are learning about the preposition “TO” and how to use it; the verb IR = to go, as well as AR verbs.  We will spend a great deal of time on learning AR verb meanings and conjugations.

6th grade: We have learned about how to identify gender in nouns to apply the definite articles.  Lesson 2 was learning to make nouns plural, and we are currently in lesson 3 which has to do with family members.  We are also learning all kinds of adjectives so that we can be able to write complete sentences about each of our immediate family members in correct family structure.

7th & 8th grade: We finished reviewing gender, articles, plurals, singulars and AR verb conjugations.  I know now that we have mastered them, but will keep on learning new AR verbs and will continue to have tests over their meanings and sometimes conjugating.  We are moving on to more reading and translation learning for all kinds of other new information; for example, we are expanding our knowledge of personal pronouns, indirect objects, direct objects, objects of the preposition and reflexive objects of prepositions.

Dear families of St. Elizabeth, thank you for all of your love, support, prayers and understanding in our such deep pain, and please keep praying for us.

All the grades are learning the names of body parts, and the expectations vary with every grade.

Pre-K:  We have been working hard mastering some Spanish basics mainly through songs and body movements.  They are little busy bodies that love to learn and that is great!  They have learned a variety of songs that name body parts.

Kinder:  Our phonics are coming along just beautifully and we love singing “Aturi-ta” to learn the body parts’ names.

1st Grade:  Wow! In addition to our basics, we have been learning about gender and the articles in Spanish (EL, LA, LOS, LAS).  We are sounding out and clapping to break into syllables to be able to read.

2nd Grade:  We are busy bees learning how to say time.  We know how to say time to the exact hour and will move on to “time after” and “time until.”

3rd Grade:  We are concentrating on detailed face parts and will put it together with the verb “to have” in constructing sentences.

4th Grade:  We have been writing sentences with a body part, the verbs “tener” or “gustar,” an indefinite article, and an adjective. Students will have an oral test on naming their face body parts before Spring Break.

5th Grade:  We are writing sentences with a body part, the verb “tener”, an article, and an adjective.

6th Grade:  We are learning many body parts as well as the verb “tener” and the present progressive of some verbs; and, writing sentences with each body part and the verb “to have” (tener) with using correct grammar and sentence structure.

7th Grade:  We are learning many body parts as well as the verb “tener” and the present progressive of some verbs; and, writing sentences with each body part and the verb “to have” (tener), using correct grammar and sentence structure.

8th Grade:  We are learning many body parts as well as the verb “tener” and the present progressive of some verbs; and, writing sentences with each body part and the verb “to have” (tener), using correct grammar and sentence structure.

Feliz Navidad!  As part of our culture unit teachings, grades Pre-K to 5th have been making Mexican ornaments to decorate the hall and the door.  Our room, hall and door are very festive and colorful with simple hand made decorations.  We will also be watching a short movie on the legend of the Christmas Flower (poinsettia).

Pre-K:  We have finished our colors and have made the transition to numbers.

Kindergarten:  We are now on our letter “K” in phonics and they are doing great sounding out the letters of our mini-book pictures.

1st Grade:   We are learning about body parts, so we know that pie is for (foot) not for (yummy pie).  We are working hard sounding each letter out and breaking into syllables to read them out and they are doing a fantastic job.

2nd Grade:  Feelings!  Oh, we can certainly express our feelings in Spanish.  We are reading sentences and trying to translate them from Spanish to English.

3rd Grade:  We have been concentrating on the Lord’s Prayer and they sound great!  We are also developing descriptive sentences with each insect, which is no easy task when you have to remember the gender and number before determining the adjectives.

4th Grade:  Studying the different forms of the verb IR = to go (voy, vas and va).  We have finished the workbook exercises and most of us are ready for a test next week.

5th Grade:  Studying AR verbs and using them in answering the questions pertaining to what we do in each class.

6th Grade:  Using adjectives correctly in describing in a sentence and paragraph form.

7th Grade:  Learning the difference between the verbs SER and ESTAR (to be), the rules on how to use them as well as when to use them.

8th Grade:  Reviewing the verbs SER and ESTAR and writing a paragraph using both forms of the verb as well as verbs in present progressive form.  We are pretending that it is Christmas and describing where we are and what we are doing as well as each member of our families.

Y MUY FELIZ ANO NUEVO!

En la clase de Espanol estamos aprendiendo a:

All of the grades practice the sign of the cross and a prayer in Spanish.

Pre-K and Kinder:  All the Spanish basics with songs and body movements. Pre-K is concentrating on learning the colors.  We take a color per week and we pronounce it, decode it, and color with it.  We are using beads to practice counting up to 20.  I will be using some cereal to identify color as well as practice our counting and our sense of touch and taste.  Kinder is concentrating on the alphabet and phonics as well as counting with beads from 1-20 and will also be having cereal to identify our senses: sight, touch, taste.

1st Grade:  We finished our unit of shapes and we did have lots of fun.  We are now on our Family unit learning the family names of our immediate families. We will move on to the days of the week, and three very important words:  Hoy (today), Manana (tomorrow) and Ayer (yesterday).

2nd Grade:  Second grade has been busy learning the personal pronouns and pretty soon we will start using certain verbs with our pronouns.  We will actually be conjugating but it will be done thru games using a verb chart and rewards.

3rd Grade:  PETS is one of our favorite subjects in third grade because we have the opportunity to learn the adjectives to describe our pets or our imaginary pets.  The first step is to learn the adjectives and sentence structure in Spanish.  2nd step is to learn to translate the introduction sentences.  3rd step is to write sentences describing our pets by color, by shape, and by describing their movements, their emotions and their qualities.  The 4th step is to put it all together in a paragraph.  The 5th step is to read our paragraph to the class and show our pet’s pictures.  We are currently in step three, so we should be finished just before Thanksgiving vacation.

4th Grade:  We have been reviewing our AR verbs and making a chart on sixteen different verbs which will be used during our next lessons in our books.  This gives us practice on writing, pronouncing and the different conjugations of the verb with all the personal pronouns.

5th Grade:  We are also using our AR verb chart as well as the verb “to go” IR and all the places that we go to.

6th Grade:  AR verb conjugation in the present is intense in this grade, so we will be using AR, ER and IR verbs for the rest of the year used in many different ways.  Writing sentences using correct grammar and sentence structure can be a little challenging.

7th Grade:  We are reviewing our verbs and sentence grammar by writing different types of sentences using all kinds of nouns, articles, using two verbs in a sentence and new vocabulary.

8th Grade:  We have been practicing our verbs with sentence creativity and verb conjugation in the present.  Our next step is to use the correct form of verb conjugation in a paragraph and than we will be moving on to AR verbs in the PAST.

It is so very rewarding to see shining eyes and big smiles at any grade level when they are confident of themselves in using a new language!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who came to the Jamaica to see our children dance.  They were awesome!

Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten
We will be concentrating on our Spanish basics:  ABC’s by name and sound, colors, days of the week, and numbers for the remainder of this quarter.  All of this is done with body movement and songs.  Kinder will start to work on mini-phonic ABC books, which will help with sounding out and reading words.

1st Grade
Have you seen our new books?  I would like for these books to go home and for the children to study what we worked on that particular day for ten minutes.

2nd Grade
We will start to review sentence structure in Spanish: article, noun, verb and adjectives.  We need to know these in order to start with our AR verbs.

3rd Grade
Sentence structure review using animals as well as colors, numbers, and a few other adjectives.

4th Grade
We have new books and we are in lesson one, which has to do with school supplies, classes and what we do in each class as well as asking the questions, “Where are you going?” and “What are you doing?”

5th Grade
We did great on greetings as well as in our personal introductions.  We will continue reviewing lesson 3 and 4, so that we can move on to our next lesson.

6th Grade
We finished lesson one which has to do with determining gender and the article in the nouns.  We are now in lesson two, family names and making sentences and nouns plural making all the necessary changes.

7th Grade
We have been reviewing gender, articles, verbs and adjectives as well as the preposition A.  We will start with lesson 4 in our books, which has to do with describing.

8th Grade
We are reviewing all the grammar that makes Spanish so fun.  We have been writing introductions, sentences, taking dictation and translating sentences, and so far we are doing great!

Please have them all study for at least 10 minutes every night; they have plenty to study.
