January will be packed with activities. We will have a day off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and begin the Catholic Schools Week with many fun projects and events.

Here is a brief monthly overview for the month of January.

Math – We will study the chapter on place value to 100.

Science – We will complete the unit on water with a unit test and begin the unit on magnets and electricity. We will also participate in the Science Fair for Catholic Schools Week. Each student will create a unique science fair project and present it to the entire 1st Grade!

Social Studies – We will study Unit 3 (Work, Work, Work). We will also study about the life & significance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many of our presidents for President’s Day.

Health – Our topics this month will all be about healthy living and good habits. This will include healthy food and exercise.

Religion – We will discuss Jesus as a child, how He began His work to spread the Good News, miracles He performed, and how we believe He is the savior of the world.

Language Arts – We will continue with our decodable readers and oral reading tests each Friday. We will also start weekly Thursday practice Spelling tests and continue Friday regular spelling tests. During Catholic School Week, we will have a Primary Spelling Bee. Don’t forget about completing the reading logs for each two week period. We will also continue guided reading groups and will send home a new reader most Fridays. In phonics, we will finish introducing and then review the long vowels. In grammar, we will begin the study of contractions, adjectives, and homophones. As always, we will work on oral blending, phonemic awareness, and phoneme segmentation. Journal writing and traveling books will also be continued.

We can hardly wait to perform the Nativity program at the 7:00 pm Christmas Eve Children’s Mass. We will need to have the children in the cafeteria no later than 6:30 so that we may get them dressed and ready.

December will be a very busy month with both academics and activities. We will have our field trip to the Dallas Arboretum on the 7th, the school book fair, our All School Christmas Program on the 15th at 7:00, and the Christmas Eve Mass performance on the 24th. The last day of classes before Christmas vacation will be the 16th with a dress rehearsal of the Nativity program at the morning Mass, followed by a class Christmas party and a noon dismissal.

Math – We will complete our coverage of subtraction with a Chapter 3 Test and will begin Chapter 4 which includes Data and Graphs.

Science – In the new unit we will begin, the students will be environmental scientists. They will study about sunlight, water, and soil.

Social Studies – We will begin Unit 3 (Work! Work! Work!) which will cover jobs, needs and wants, and spending and saving. We will meet Clara Barton and George Washington Carver. We will also be checking to see if your child knows their address and phone number.

Religion – During the month of December we will be involved with studying Advent and the birth of Jesus and practicing the Nativity Program for Children’s Mass on Christmas Eve. After the first of the year we will discuss the Epiphany and begin to discuss how Jesus grew up.

Health – We will begin to talk about how to keep our bodies healthy. The first topic we will cover will be good nutrition.

Language Arts – We will study the following sounds: /ch/ spelled ch, _tch, /ar/ spelled ar, /hw/spelled wh, /w/spelled w_, /er/ spelled er,ir, ur, /k/ spelled k, /ng/ spelled _ng, /kw/ spelled qu, /y/ spelled y, long /a/, and /s/ spelled ce and ci_. We will have new decodable readers and finish the big book “Worksong” and begin “Machines in Our Garden”. In Grammar we will finish up with nouns and introduce compound words. As always, we will work throughout the month on oral blending, phonemic awareness, and phoneme segmentation. Journal writing will be incorporated into the day. We will also continue writing the “Traveling Books” that you have been seeing coming home with your child. We will also be initiating class short stories. These class stories will help our emergent writers begin to understand the writing process. (prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing and reflecting)

We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed Christmas season and a Happy New Year! We hope that we can all find time in our busy schedules to remember the reason for the season!

We will continue working in the Shurley Method on punctuation and capitalization skills and learning the rules for the above. We will also continue working with sentences and how they would be labeled. We will be adding these parts of speech: Prepositions and objects of the prepositions. Along with these, the students will continue to locate the simple and complete subject and predicate of a written sentence. YIIIPPPPPEEEE! I love Shurley! Don’t forget Shurley tutoring on Tuesday mornings at 7:30am!

We will continue to read How to Eat Fried Worms during our reading block. Students should make sure that they keep ALL comprehension questions and vocabulary sheets for these chapters in their binders. We will use these to study for our test at the end of the novel, which is quickly approaching. Please note, I will give a study guide as well as a week’s notice for the test. Watch emails and class website for this information to be released. Every student should be reading 30 minutes Monday-Thursday. This is standard homework for the 4th grade that does not change. The first book report grade has been released, posted on the website as well as in several emails. This date is October 14, 2011.

In Science we have just completed Vascular Plants and their parts. We are just working our way into our last booklet of Nancy Larson. We will be reading and learning about amphibians and reptiles. Along with this, the students will have a research project on one of the above animals they chose in class. Again, this due date has been published in emails as well as on the website. This material is to be completed by the student at home and returned by September 15th, 2011.

In Social Studies, we continue to discuss the climate, landforms and regions of the United States as well as in Texas. This is to prepare us for the upcoming lessons of the first people in America as well as in Texas. THE FUN IS JUST STARTING!!

In Religion we have discussed a variety of material including faith, sin, and what the Gospel teaches about how one corrects. God creates only good; however, it is a bad choice or decision that leads someone down a path of destruction, and much more. We will continue to discuss these topics; i.e. What happens to my relationship when I sin? How should I handle being angry with another person. How would God expect me to act and is it always easy to do what Jesus would want me to do. Who is speaking to me when I make certain decisions?

Health – We will continue studying about basic safety.

Religion – This is a very important time in our religious lives. We will finish the Lenten season with viewing the Passion Play on the 15th, the Living Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday and then begin the Easter Season when we resume classes on the 26th. During the month we will learn about the Holy Week. (Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday)

We were really proud of our little actors and actresses. We would like to thank the parents for helping with the costumes, the food, and the decorations for the wonderful reception afterward, as well as the set up and clean up, and most of all to Mrs. Stansberry for helping to direct the program. As they say, “It takes a village to raise a child”.

We can hardly wait to perform the nativity program at the 7:00 pm Christmas Eve Children’s Mass. We will need to have the children in the cafeteria no later than 6:30 so that we may get them dressed and ready.

December will be a very busy month with both academics and activities. We will have our field trip to the Dallas Arboretum on the 1st, the school book fair, our All School Christmas Program on the 16th at 7:00, and the Christmas Eve Mass performance on the 24th. The last day of classes before Christmas vacation will be the 17th with a class Christmas party and a noon dismissal.

Math – We will complete our coverage of subtraction with a Chapter 3 Test and will begin Chapter 4 which includes Data and Graphs.

Science – In the new unit we will begin, the students will be environmental scientists. They will study about sunlight, water, and soil.

Social Studies – We will continue with Unit 5 (This Is Our Country). Looking ahead we will discuss our 13 original colonies, the symbols of our country, our holidays, how we choose our country’s leaders, and meet Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Religion – The month of December will be involved with studying Advent and the birth of Jesus and practicing the Nativity Program for Children’s Mass on Christmas Eve.

Health – We will begin to talk about how to keep our bodies healthy. The first topic we will cover will be good nutrition.

Language Arts – We will begin long vowel sounds starting with a, i, and o. We will also study the /s/ sound spelled ce and ci. We will have new decodable readers and finish the big book “Machines In Our Garden”. In Grammar we will finish up with nouns and introduce pronouns. We will also incorporate a writing assignment with an art project for Christmas. As always we will work throughout the month on oral blending, phonemic awareness, and phoneme segmentation. Journal writing will also be continued.

We would like to take the time to wish everyone a blessed Christmas season and hope that there is time in our busy schedules to remember the reason for the season!

October will also include a whirlwind of activity. We will administer the ITBS Achievement Testing the week of October 11-15. There will be a noon dismissal on October 15 for Staff Development. The week of October 18-21 will be Red Ribbon (Drug Awareness) Week. October 22 is a Teacher In-Service Day; so therefore, there will be no school that day. The Fall Festival Halloween Carnival will be on October 30 so be sure to plan to attend for all of the fun and to work in our booths.

We will also have a jam packed month with our curriculum. Here is a brief monthly overview of what we will cover in October.

Math – We will cover the chapter on addition and begin the chapter on subtraction.

Science – We will have ended the unit on human development and will begin the unit on plants.

Social Studies – We will cover Unit 2 (In My Community)

Health – We will discuss going to the doctor and dentist, “sneeze in your sleeve,” Halloween safety, and begin fire safety.

Religion - We will make a creation book and since October is the month of the rosary, each child will make a rosary. We will also pray the rosary as a primary group and toward the end of the month, as a whole school, with the “Living Rosary”.

Language Arts – We will begin to have an oral reading test on Fridays using one of the decodable books from the week. You will know in advance which reader will be tested. This will be a one minute timed reading. In grammar we will introduce adjectives, telling sentences, questions, -ed endings and review capitalization. In spelling we will continue to have 10 words with 2 bonus words. We will introduce more consonants and vowels throughout the month while working on oral blending, phonemic awareness, and phoneme segmentation. Journal writing will also be continued.

We will also have several art projects going on in our classroom for Halloween.

As you can see, we have hit the ground running. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us.
