Pizza, Paletas & Perfectly

Roasted Corn Friday!

Thanks so much for your enthusiastic response!!  We have surpassed orders from our sale in October!!

We will have your pre-ordered pizzas available for pick-up at a table on the back porch immediately after school.  Those who pre-ordered a pizza and will be collecting your children from aftercare may pick-up their pizzas in the cafeteria.

If  you have already sent in your payment for your pizza, we will have a “Paid Table” just off the porch with your order ready to go!

Pizza by the slice, paletas and roasted corn will also be for sale on the back porch after school:

  • $1.50 – per slice of pizza
  • $1.25 – Paleta – we have ordered a variety of flavors: strawberry, watermelon, lime, coconut, pineapple. We ordered 400 paletas, so please fee free to buy in bulk!  You don’t even have to chase down the Paleta Man!!
  • $2.00 – Roasted Corn each and $15 for 10!

Mrs. Rachel Robb – Middle School Science

Science articles are due April 21, May 5, and May 19.  The bonus article is due May 19.

8th Grade Science Binder is due May 17.  6th/7th grade binders are due May 24.

8th grade will have final exams on May 18, 20, and 23, 2011.  6th/7th grade final exams will be May 27, May 31, June 1, June 2.

6th Grade

The goal is to complete Chapter 15 – 18 for the remainder of the school year.  Students will do various activities with each chapter.  The chapter on the atmosphere students will create a review game.  Weather patterns students will keep a weather journal.

7th Grade

Students are currently working on completing a booklet about protists and fungi.  Students will create a birthday month fungi poster.  Next, students will study plants.  Time permitting we will finish the year with the endocrine system and reproduction.

8th Grade

Students just completed their study of animals and have moved on to the study of the environment.  The goal is for students to dissect 9 different specimens in a comparative anatomy study.  This should take place once we return from Easter break.  We will finish the year by studying various ecosystems and biomes.

Mrs. Patton & Mrs. Nelson – First Grade

Wow, what is the weather going to do next?  It has certainly played havoc with our plans lately.  Maybe the grounghog will be correct and Spring will be just around the corner. 

February will be another busy month for us.  Not only is it Black History month, but we will discuss Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and  Washington’s and Lincoln’s Birthdays. We will have a Dioceson Teacher In-Service Day on the 21st which means no school for the students. 

Here is a brief overview of what we will cover during February.

Math – We will finish up Chapter 5 and begin Chapter 8 covering money and time.  We will learn about pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and the dollar bill.  We also learn about their value the value of groups of coins. 

Science – We will finish the study of magnets and begin discussing electricity.

Health – We will continue learning about good nutritution while making models of the food pyramid.

Social Studies – We will talk about needs and wants, spending and saving, what jobs they can do when they grow up, President’s Day, and transportation.

Religion – In religion we will study about the apostles, how Jesus shows God’s love, how Jesus teaches us to love God, and how Jesus teaches us to love others.

Language Arts – In phonics we will study long vowels followed by r, long /a/spelled ai_ and _ay, long /i/ spelled igh, long /i/ spelled _y and _ie, long /o/ spelled _oe, oa_, and ow, and long /u/ spelled _ew and _ue.  In grammar we will be introducing how to change y to i and add es and review nouns and sentence types.  We will continue to have decodable take-home readers and oral reading tests each Friday.  We will also continue to have practice spelling test on Thursdays and then the regular spelling test on Fridays.

Math: Students will learn about money and time.  They will find the amount of change after making a purchase.  They will also add and subtract money with regrouping.  Students will also tell, write and show time to the quarter hour, to five and one minute intervals.

Spelling:  Spelling words will focus on the br, fr, tr, sl and sp sounds.


Reading:  Students will continue to define vocabulary using the glossary. Stories that the students will read and will be tested over are :  Monster Tracks, Molly the Brave and Me & Dragons and Giants.

English/Writing:  Students will learn about subject verb agreement, punctuation in a letter and regular/irregular verbs.  The class will continue to work on Treasure books for writing.

Religion:  Students will focus on the season of Lent and they will be ready to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Science:  Students will examine simple machines.  They will identify how inclined planes make work easier.  They will also describe the characteristics of wedges and screws.

Social Studies:  Students will discuss people and place in history.  They will will identify families as the basic social unit and talk about customs.  Students will also recognize the diversity of the American culture.

Health: March is national Nutrition Month,  so students will describe how a healthy diet can protect against diseases/conditions.  They will also name the basic food groups and select foods for each group.

January News -

Religion – We will learn about the life of Jesus.  We will make a timeline of Jesus’ life.

Language Arts – We will continue to work on oral blending – vowel replacement, initial and final consonant.  We will work on letter sounds, blending sounds into words, segmenting words, and reading sight words.  We are wrapping up our unit on Friends and we will begin a new unit on The Wind.  Throughout this unit we will listen to a variety of books and poems to understand and explore how wind is created.  We will learn the difference between informational prose and narrative prose.  We will continue to read our decodables.  Please remember that decodables are sent home daily and returned to school daily.  We read the decodables each day to build  fluency. Kindergrarten will have a spelling bee in the classroom on Friday, January 28, and the two winners will move on to the Primary Spelling Bee on Wednesday, Febraury 2! Please practice those sight words!

Math – This month we are practicing counting by 5′s to 100.  We will learn about time to the hour.  We will understand and use the vocabularty, “take away, subtract, less, minus, equal, second, minute, and hour.”  We will continue to work on numeral recognition, and what numeral is missing? Every fifth lesson, we will work on graphing , and every tenth lesson we will do a problem solving activity.  The 100th day of school is quickly approaching!  All 100 day projects are due on Monday, January 31st. Have fun working with your child and counting to 100!

Science – This month we are learning about our solar system!  We will explore our Milky Way Galaxy! We will learn the names of our planets in our solar system, and the sun is a star! We will also learn about the season – WINTER!

Social Studies – We will continue to celebrate our stars in the classroom.  We will also learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. and make a craft.

Congratulations to all of our students for a beautiful Christmas presentation! A job well done! It was a pleasant surprise to see such a large audience for our delayed performance. Thank you parents for your support of the performing arts. Another thank you to everyone for your generous Christmas gifts. I hope everyone had a relaxing winter break.

The 7th grade has begun the study of opera in preparation for their field trip to the Dallas Opera’s performance of Romeo and Juliet. Permission slips are due back on January 21st.  Eighth grade will begin working on new hand bell music for a spring program. The other music classes are taking a look at melody.
