February was a short month but extremely busy.  The library celebrated Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, President’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and Black History Month.  Library activities revolved around fairy tales, legends, fables, and tall tales.  February was also known as Library Lovers Book Month.  Besides checking out library books for Reading Counts and AR tests, circulation was lively with students checking out books for reading pleasure.

Six Flags and Weekly Reader once again offered the “Read to Success” Six Hour Reading Program for students in K-6th grades.  Congratulations to students who successfully read 6 hours for Six Flags Tickets.  The reading logs have been mailed and tickets should arrive sometime in May, just in time for summer fun.

March promises to be another busy month in the library.  Among the many activities, students will celebrate Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and Women’s History Month.  March 2, students celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday with Green Eggs and Ham and Seussville learning activities featuring all of Dr. Seuss’ wonderful books.  In observance of Women’s History month, 5th grade library students will research a famous “Woman who made a difference”.  During weekly library lessons, 3rd and 4th grade students will begin keeping a reading diary while reading Ramona’s World by Beverly Cleary and Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli respectfully.

As always, the library welcomes donated books in good condition.  We are especially in need of Reading Counts and Accelerated Reading books when your students are finished reading the book.  If you and your student can help, please consider donating to the library.

Mark your calendars in April for another exciting Scholastic Book Fair.  Look for promotional flyers announcing this year’s theme and all the other thrilling plans underway.  Volunteers will again be needed.  If interested, please contact Debbie Gleason at 972.217.2807 or Monica Connelly mconnelly@saintspride.com.

Teen Tech Week

The library is once again hosting Teen Tech Week, March 6-11 sponsored by the American Library Association.  This year’s theme is “Mix & Mash @ Your Library”.  Teen Tech Week is a national initiative aimed at students, teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults.  The purpose is to ensure that students are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those that are offered through the library, such as databases, audio books, DVDs, and video games. Week-long fun activities are planned: video contests, Solitaire, Dewey Decimal Bingo, type-off contest, Pinball Contest, and scratch projects. Prizes, ribbons and certificates will be awarded at the closing of the week, Thursday March 10, with an ice cream social.

Have a wonderful, fun-filled and restful Spring Break!

“Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colors, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential.” Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944)

What an exciting month we have had in Art!  Congratulations go to the following students in the Catholic Schools Week Poster Contest:  6-8 Grades: Johanna Alvarado; 4-5 Black History Month by looking at 20th century African American paintings, by such artists as Jacob Lawrence, Philip Everman, and Faith Ringgold.

The lower grades, 1st & 2nd, completed the study of value, pattern, and balance while designing colorful fishes using chalk pastels.  This month students will experiment with tempera and watercolor techniques in producing “fun time” paintings similar to Pieter Bruegel’s colorful multifigured painting style.  3rd grade students completed 3-dimensional mummy cases.  This month, students will develop an appreciation for art that depicts events from the founding of our country.  The program “Picturing America” will be featured.

4th grade students will finish symmetrically balanced African Masks using glitter, beads and feathers.  This month students will study Wassily Kandinsky’s color palette.  5th grade students will learn and examine Pointillism and Surrealism.

In February, 6th and 7th grade students finished their stain-glass window designs using an oiled crayon technique.  Sketchbook activities revolved around Chinese New Year, drawing sketches of Chinese etchings.  Cityscapes will be the focus during March.  Students will learn how to draw a dazzling, towering skyline in five steps.

Thanks for your continued support and for letting me share my love of art with your children.

Have an enjoyable spring break!

“No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination” Edward Hopper – American Realist Painter

1st and 2nd grade students will study value, pattern, and balance.  Students will work with watercolor creating snowflakes.

3rd grade students will develop an understanding of symmetrical, or formal, balance and produce their own three-dimensional mummy cases.

4th grade students will develop an understanding of balance as a basic principle of art.  Students will produce their own symmetrically balanced masks using a fold over technique.

5th grade students demonstrate the principle of symmetrical/formal balance in their paper formed totems.  Students studied the totemic art of the Northwest Coast Indians in order to appreciate its symbolism.

6th and 7th grade students reviewed analogous and complementary color schemes, split-complement, triadic and monochromatic color schemes.  Students will incorporate color schemes into their own stained-glass window designs using an oiled crayon technique.

For the month of January, classes will be making posters for Catholic School’s Week that is later in the month.  Some of the posters will be entered in the Diocesan poster contest.

As the year comes to an end, I am thankful for many things, but most of all, for the opportunity to teach your children.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

October 17-23 is recognized as National Teen Week.  In celebration of Teen Read Week, plans are underway to host several fun events:

  • October 20 – NJHS book and cookie sale (reasonable prices – 50 cents & under)
  • October 18 – Library Read-a-Thon (students in grades 4-8 are invited to the library from 3:30-5:00 to join in the 5th Annual Library Read-a-Thon – they may bring a pillow, slippers, snacks, and of course, a book.  The first 30 minutes will be time to snack and get settled into a comfortable place in the Library and then one full hour to read quietly.)  Those who participate will be awarded a reading certificate and a ribbon.

The month of October is recognized as Mystery Month.  The library offers a good selection of mystery books.  The library hosts Trick-or-Treats for good behavior.  Good student behavior is rewarded with a library treat throughout the month.

During the month of September, library class activities included checking out books, storytelling, learning how books are placed on library shelves, identifying authors, illustrators, publishers, title and copyright dates, and how to distinguish between fiction, biography, and non-fiction books. The first two weeks were spent welcoming all students, getting to know new students and presenting library procedures.

Once again the library will be open before school, during recess and after school for student use.  Students may use the library’s 8 computers with access to the Internet, Dallas Public Library Periodicals for research, the Dallas Morning Newspaper, AR and Reading Counts tests.

Welcome back to Debbie Gleason and Amy Solis who volunteer every week in the library.  The library is a success because of these wonderful, dedicated volunteers.  If anyone is interested in helping achieve our goals in the library, have some free time, and love working with children and books, come on in and volunteer.  If reading to children is your talent, we could use you as well.  It’s a fun way to earn volunteer hours.  You can contact me through my e-mail address: mconnelly@stelizabethofh.org.  The children would love to have you!

Please check the library web site for library information, upcoming activities, reference information available through the school web page. Look for the link with my name.  My web page also includes links to homework help, reference and educational game links. This year all overdue library notices will be sent to parents via RenWeb.  This procedure should expedite taking care of student overdue library books and fines.

Many fun-filled activities and events are planned for this Fall:

  • Birthday Book Club
  • Teen Read Week – October 17-23
  • Fall Book Fair – dates and times to be announced

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.

~Georgia O’Keefe (artist of the month)

St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic School’s art program offers students the opportunity to understand, interpret and appreciate the visual arts and to explore their creative potential through hands-on art projects. The art program’s emphasis is on exploration and manipulation of art materials along with an exposure to a new visual language, perceptions, materials and the world of art and artists. This year students will view and discuss various works of art from different time periods and cultures.

As students learn to recognize, discuss and work with art, they build a foundation for making judgments about its form, content, technique and purpose. Discussion, critical analysis and observation of art provide a basis for understanding, supporting and enjoying the visual arts – now and throughout their lives.

First-Seventh ART: classes will be learning all the Elements of Art this year and we will begin with LINE. Art would not be art without line, sometimes known as “a moving point.” It is absolutely essential as a concept to depicting objects and symbols and defining shapes.  All students are learning about the many different kinds of lines to create abstract designs.  Featured artists are Joan Miro and Wassily Kandinsky.

Next we will move on to Color and a study of Henri Matisse.  We will study his use of color as well as positive and negative space.

The Dallas Museum of Art is once again bringing the Go van Gogh program to our school for students in 1st through 6th grade.  Programs will begin September 28 with 2nd grade exploring “Searching for Faces”, followed by 3rd grade students learning about “Stories in Art”.  “African and African-American Art” will be presented October 13th to 6th graders.

I am excited about the opportunity to get to know all the students through art, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year.  Thank you all for your support in creating a successful art program at St. Elizabeth.

It’s about children, it’s about books and it’s about having fun.  From award winners and bestsellers to picture books and favorite series, the Book Fair is filled with hundreds of books that will take your student on adventures they will never forget.  Shop the fair for Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers.  Look in Thursday folders for Book Fair flyers which will include all the information you will need.

If interested in volunteering your time and energy, we’d love to have you join in on the fun.  It’s a great fun way to earn those volunteer hours and get a 10% discount on your purchases.  Please call Debbie Gleason (972-217-2807) or e-mail Monica Connelly at mconnelly@saintspride.com to volunteer for the Book Fair.  The children would love to have you.

In November all students will continue learning essential library skills, participate in SmartBoard activities, and check out library books for reading pleasure.

Please check the library web site for library information, upcoming activities, reference information available through the school web page. Look for the link with my name.  My web page also includes links to homework help, Dallas Public Library, reference and educational game links. This year all overdue library notices will be sent to parents via RenWeb.  This procedure should expedite taking care of student overdue library books and fines.

I’m looking forward to meeting all parents this Friday at Parent-Teacher conferences.

Welcome to the PK-3 Grade Technology Program!  I’m once again looking forward to teaching your children and working with parents to make our technology program exciting and productive.

We’re off to a great start!  This first quarter will be dedicated to reviewing computer terminology and improving keyboarding skills.  Proper hand placement and computer posture will be emphasized.  PK and Kinder students will investigate the keyboard and recognize the letters of their names.  1st grade will practice basic keyboard recognition and improve mouse techniques.  Grades 2nd and 3rd will begin an original story, incorporate pictures using PAINT, and print their stories.

This is a reminder that Grades PK-3 are expected to follow the computer lab rules as well as general school rules in the downstairs lab.

Thank you to those who help keep our school’s technology program going.  Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

The new 2009-2010 school year has started really well.  The students all seem excited and ready to explore new library activities.  September is especially busy.  Many fun-filled activities and events are planned for this year. Fall activities include:

  • Birthday Book Club (parents may honor their child’s birthday with a book donation)
  • Teen Read Week – October 19-23
  • Scholastic Fall Book Fair – December 6-13

The first library classes have been spent welcoming back old students and getting to know new students, along with reviewing library procedures and expectations.  This month PK and Kinder students enjoy storytelling and learning the parts of a book from cover to cover.  1st grade is learning the proper care of library books as they prepare to check out books to read in their classrooms.  2nd and 3rd grade students will investigate fiction, non-fiction and biography books.

Please check the library website for library information, upcoming activities, and reference information. My web page also includes links to homework help, reference and educational games links.  All overdue library notices will be sent via RenWeb.

Welcome back to library volunteers Debbie Gleason, Gary Cervenka, Priscilla Romero, and Amy Solis, as well as to our new library volunteer, Veronica Mendoza. The school library is a success because of these wonderful, dedicated volunteers.  If anyone is interested in helping achieve our goals in the library, have some free time, and love working with children and books, come on in and volunteer.  If reading to children is your talent, we could use you as well.  Library work is a fun way to earn volunteer hours.  Parents can contact me through my e-mail address: mconnelly@saintspride.com.
