St. Elizabeth can turn Box Tops for Education into cash to upgrade the Reading Counts program.  Just clip Box Tops coupons from hundreds of your favorite products and send them to your child’s homeroom.  A new campaign for Box Tops for Education is coming to St. Elizabeth.  New incentives and monthly goodies will be offered.

Mrs. Isabel Elias has graciously accepted the responsibility of collecting and counting Box Tops each month.  She will be looking for parents wanting a great cup of coffee and needing volunteer hours for “Clip & Coffee Mornings” to help clip, count and package Box Tops each month.

Anyone interested in helping please email Mrs. Connelly and I will forward the information to Mrs. Elias.

Remember: You can make a difference every time you buy groceries!

Mrs. Connelly – Library

Posted on March 11, 2010, by Monica Connelly, under Library.

March promises to be another busy month in the library.  Among the many activities, students will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Women’s History Month.  Students celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday with Green Eggs and Ham and Seussville learning activities featuring all of Dr. Seuss’ wonderful books.  In observance of Women’s History month, library students will research a famous “Woman who made a difference”. 2nd and 3rd grade students will begin keeping a reading diary in the library.  Kinder and 1st grade students will check out books to take home this month.

Although February was a short month, the library was quite busy.  Besides checking out library books for Reading Counts and AR tests, circulation was lively with students checking out books for reading pleasure as well.  Activities included Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Presidents Day, and Black History Month.

As always, the library welcomes donated books in good condition.  We are especially in need of Reading Counts and Accelerated Reading books when your students are finished reading the book.  If you and your student can help, please consider donating to the library.

Mark your calendars in April for another exciting Scholastic Book Fair.  Look for promotional flyers announcing this year’s theme and all the other thrilling plans underway.  Volunteers will again be needed.  If interested, please contact Debbie Gleason at 972.217.2807 or Monica Connelly.

Have a wonderful, fun-filled and restful Spring Break!

Teen Tech Week

The library is once again hosting Teen Tech Week, March 29-31 sponsored by the American Library Association.  This year’s theme is “Get Connected @ Your Library.”  Teen Tech Week is a national initiative aimed at students, teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults.  The purpose is to ensure that students are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those that are offered through the library, such as databases, audio books, DVDs, and video games. Week-long fun activities are planned: video contests, Solitaire, Dewey Decimal Bingo, type-off contest, Pinball Contest, and scratch projects. Prizes, ribbons and certificates will be awarded at the closing of the week, Wednesday March 31, with an ice cream social.

Art Department

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.

~ Camille Pissarro

What an exciting month we have had in Art!  The Dallas Museum of Art’s Go Van Gogh Program has been very successful.  4th grade students enjoyed Art of the Lone Star State, 3rd grade enjoyed Art of Africa, and 6B boys enjoyed Lights, Camera, Action!  All Go Van Gogh programs feature hands-on activities that provide opportunities for individual creative expression.

Pre-k & Kindergarten

We will be making a card with Saint Patrick leaves and water colors for the month of March.  We will also be working on Robots made out of shapes.

3rd & 4th Grade

During the months of January and February, students looked at movement in works of art.  The focus: Impressionism.  Students were presented with a brief history of the Impressionism art movement, focusing on capturing the overall impression of a scene through effects produced by using light and color in various ways.  Students studied Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Camille Pisarro, Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet, Eduoard Manet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Paul Cezanne.  Impressionism will evolve into Post-Impressionism with artists such Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.

Beginning in March, students will study Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso.  Students will examine their paintings, their works of art.  Students will study why these artists were inventive and perfect in the many different aspects of their art.  Lesson overview will focus on shapes and structures, shapes and spaces, and drawing people who pose.

1st, 2nd, 5th , 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades

In Art the 1st and 2nd graders are busy mastering “Line Abstract Drawing” and “Watercolor Seascapes.”

The 5th and 6th graders are learning about surrealist artists who are well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images.

The 7th and 8th graders are learning about one of the most prolific artist ever, Pablo Picasso. We are studying and will be drawing one of his contributions to the art world, cubism. Cubism is the idea of looking at something from different angles. We will be working with oil pastels.

Mrs. Connelly – Pre-k Computer

Posted on March 11, 2010, by Monica Connelly, under Pre-kindergarten.

Computer students in grades PK-3rd are having a fantastic year so far.  I am constantly amazed at what St. E’s kids can do.

PK and Kindergarten students have mastered the proper use of the mouse. 1st grade students can log on and off the Internet typing program, Dance Mat Typing, and have progressed to levels 2 and 3.  Students have improved their hand placement on the keyboards and exhibit proper computer posture.  Please have your student practice keyboarding over the Spring Break.

2nd grade students are composing stories to match made-up zoo animals (switchzoo.com), and will then print their stories.  3rd grade students are learning Power Point.  They will be working on a 7 slide Power Point show to be presented in May.

Thanks for your continued support of our Technology program here at St. Elizabeth.

Enjoy Spring Break!

Posted on December 10, 2009, by Monica Connelly, under Computer.

PK and Kinder students have been successful logging on and off three different computer programs as well as surfing approved Internet educational sites.  Students have mastered mouse techniques as well as perfecting computer posture.  Christmas online activities are featured apples4theteacher, crayola.com, and starfall.com. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students have created a folder on the desktop to save and retrieve original holiday stories and pictures.  Keyboarding will be the focus after the holidays.  Students are encouraged to practice their computer skills over the break.

As the year comes to an end, I am thankful for many things, but most of all, for the opportunity to teach your children.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Grocery Store Fundraiser

Posted on December 10, 2009, by Monica Connelly, under Fundraisers.

Did you know that Tom Thumb donates a portion of your purchases to St. Elizabeth School? Tom Thumb has community programs to donate 1% of every dollar you spend at their store back to St. Elizabeth School.

But, they do not donate to St. Elizabeth unless you sign up for their program and designate St. Elizabeth as your beneficiary.

To participate in:
Tom Thumb – St. Elizabeth’s number is #648. Turn in a completed application at your Tom Thumb store; they will give you a Reward Card, present that card to the cashier during your transaction. To change or verify the designated beneficiary of your current Reward Card, ask the cashier during your transaction.

The more people that designate St. Elizabeth as their beneficiary school the more dollars St. Elizabeth earns to help defray the costs of tuition.

Thank you for participating in this fundraiser.

Mrs. Connelly – Library and PK-Third Grade Computer

Posted on November 11, 2009, by Monica Connelly, under Computer, Library.

Library News
Excitement is building as the library prepares to host another Scholastic Book Fair, December 6-11.  This year’s theme is Destination Book Fair, reading around the world!  Activities such as door prizes, raffles, contests, guessing games, and book scavenger hunts are planned.  The fair is a great opportunity for the library to add to its collection, grant teacher’s book wishes and serves as a fundraiser for our library.

It’s about children, it’s about books and it’s about having fun.  From award winners and bestsellers to picture books and favorite series, the Book Fair is filled with hundreds of books that will take your student on adventures they will never forget.  Shop the fair for Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers.  Look in Thursday folders for Book Fair flyers which will include all the information you will need.

If interested in volunteering your time and energy, we’d love to have you join in on the fun.  It’s a great fun way to earn those volunteer hours and get a 10% discount on your purchases.  Please call Debbie Gleason (972-217-2807) or e-mail Monica Connelly at mconnelly@saintspride.com to volunteer for the Book Fair.  The children would love to have you.

In November all students will continue learning essential library skills, participate in SmartBoard activities, and check out library books for reading pleasure.

Please check the library web site for library information, upcoming activities, reference information available through the school web page. Look for the link with my name.  My web page also includes links to homework help, Dallas Public Library, reference and educational game links. This year all overdue library notices will be sent to parents via RenWeb.  This procedure should expedite taking care of student overdue library books and fines.

I’m looking forward to meeting all parents this Friday at Parent-Teacher conferences.

PK-3 Computer
PK & Kinder students continue practicing mouse techniques while learning different programs.  1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students are working on holiday stories, using WORD, and original drawings, using PAINT.  Students saved their work on the computer desktops, will print, and display their projects by the downstairs lab.

PK-3rd Grade Computer Students are AMAZING!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Computer – Pre-kindergarten to Third Grade

Posted on September 24, 2009, by Monica Connelly, under Humanities Notes.

Welcome to the PK-3 Grade Technology Program!  I’m once again looking forward to teaching your children and working with parents to make our technology program exciting and productive.

We’re off to a great start!  This first quarter will be dedicated to reviewing computer terminology and improving keyboarding skills.  Proper hand placement and computer posture will be emphasized.  PK and Kinder students will investigate the keyboard and recognize the letters of their names.  1st grade will practice basic keyboard recognition and improve mouse techniques.  Grades 2nd and 3rd will begin an original story, incorporate pictures using PAINT, and print their stories.

This is a reminder that Grades PK-3 are expected to follow the computer lab rules as well as general school rules in the downstairs lab.

Thank you to those who help keep our school’s technology program going.  Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Library

Posted on September 24, 2009, by Monica Connelly, under Library.

The new 2009-2010 school year has started really well.  The students all seem excited and ready to explore new library activities.  September is especially busy.  Many fun-filled activities and events are planned for this year. Fall activities include:

  • Birthday Book Club (parents may honor their child’s birthday with a book donation)
  • Teen Read Week – October 19-23
  • Scholastic Fall Book Fair – December 6-13

The first library classes have been spent welcoming back old students and getting to know new students, along with reviewing library procedures and expectations.  This month PK and Kinder students enjoy storytelling and learning the parts of a book from cover to cover.  1st grade is learning the proper care of library books as they prepare to check out books to read in their classrooms.  2nd and 3rd grade students will investigate fiction, non-fiction and biography books.

Please check the library website for library information, upcoming activities, and reference information. My web page also includes links to homework help, reference and educational games links.  All overdue library notices will be sent via RenWeb.

Welcome back to library volunteers Debbie Gleason, Gary Cervenka, Priscilla Romero, and Amy Solis, as well as to our new library volunteer, Veronica Mendoza. The school library is a success because of these wonderful, dedicated volunteers.  If anyone is interested in helping achieve our goals in the library, have some free time, and love working with children and books, come on in and volunteer.  If reading to children is your talent, we could use you as well.  Library work is a fun way to earn volunteer hours.  Parents can contact me through my e-mail address: mconnelly@saintspride.com.
