We are looking forward to our Halloween Parade and Program on October 31st! We will have our parade at 8:15 and immediately after the parade, we will begin our Halloween program in the cafeteria!
Your children did a fantastic job praying the Rosary! We learned the parts to the rosary! We will continue to pray the rosary every Wednesday this month at 2:00 p.m. in the Church. We will learn about the ten commandments and that God gave us the ten commandments to help us live as an image of God. On November 1, All Saints Day, your child may dress up as his/her patron saint or their favorite saint. In November, we will learn about saints and how we can be a saint!
Science – We have enjoyed learning about bats and spiders! During the last week of October, we will learn about pumpkins and participate in an online study of pumpkins and seeds. We will estimate and count the number of seeds in our pumpkin. We will observe how a pumpkin decomposes in the science center. During November, we will investigate healthy habits.
Language Arts – we will continue our unit on Shadows. We will work in literacy groups on the children’s needs. So, if a child needs to learn letters and sounds, we will work on those skills. If children know letters and sounds, then we will work on blending and segmenting words, reading decodables, etc. As a whole group, we will continue to work on letters, sounds, blending, segmenting, reading poems and stories.
Math – we will work on counting, writing, identifying, and sequencing numerals. We will identify missing numerals and identify groups that have more, less, or are equal. Kindergarten has gotten off to a great start! We enjoyed our bear unit and ended our unit with a teddy bear picnic. We had a great time!
In Religion, we are learning about the story of Creation. We are making a really cute book about Creation and are acting out the story in class. Next, we will learn about the Garden of Eden. At the end of September, we will learn about angels and learn our prayer, “Guardian Angel”. In October, we will learn about the rosary and how to pray the rosary.
We have now begun a new unit in Open Court (Language Arts) on “school”. Our goal in this unit is to have children see books as a valuable resource for learning about school – activities, routines, and people. A second goal is to have children learn about the literary features of narrative – audience, reader, writer, and features of books – title, author, and illustrator. Our third goal is to begin to learn how to create literary works themselves. Each day, the students will listen to poems, read books, review letters and sounds, listen for first, middle, and last sounds, listen for missing sounds, and work on rhyming.
In Math, we have been working on numbers 1, 2, and 3. We have worked on the shape – circle. We will continue to work on our numerals 1 – 10. We will learn about the number line, make finger representations for 1 – 10, make tallies thru 10, look at base ten blocks thru 10, and count and sequence numerals to 10. We will learn about these shapes: circle, triangle, and square. We will also make patterns AB, AABB, ABC. We will learn about the following vocabulary: same, different, equal, more, less, and next.
In Science, we have been learning about the parts of our body. We will explore the five senses and do various activities related to our five senses. We will also learn about nutrition, healthy snacks, exercise, and how to keep our body healthy.
In Social Studies, we are having a “star” of the week. Each child will get a turn to be a star of the week. On your child’s turn, your child will receive a book of compliments. On Friday, of that week, your child may bring a book, show and tell, and picture to share with the class.
Please remember to continue to review the weekly newsletters for more information! Thank you and have a great month!

We want to thank all of the Kindergarten families for their hard work and time in preparing for the Halloween Carnival. The children had a wonderful time! The children also enjoyed our field trip to the Native Lands at Green Meadows. The children experienced animals from the land, saw falcons and hawks sweep over their heads, learned about music and dance from Native Americans and Africa. The kids had a great time and we truly appreciate all of your help on the field trip! This is what we will be doing this month:
Religion – We will learn about the saints and make a book about them. We will also discuss what we are thankful for in our lives.
Language Arts – We will complete our unit on Shadows and move on to our next unit, Finding Friends. Students will use pictures, print, and people to gather information about friendship, identify similarities and differences in literary elements (characters, problems, theme), retell and summarize stories, and regularly read picture stories in groups and independently. We will learn about the following letters: Ss, Mm, Dd, Aa, Hh, Tt, and Oo. We will work in our Handwriting Without Tears book on these letters. We will also continue to work in our SRA Open Court book on segmenting letters, sounding out words, letter sounds, reading decodable books, spelling words, and reviewing our tricky (sight) words. The kids are also enjoying working on letter mats on placing letters in alphabetical order, playing games with letters such as “Simon Says”, echoing letter sounds, and finding missing letters.
Math – We will work on numbers 0 – 20 – identifying numerals, rote and rational count to 20, trace and write to 20, and ordering numerals. The children will identify a penny and dime and learn the value of each coin. We have been working with ten sticks and cubes to understand the place value of numerals 0 – 20 and your kids are doing a great job! We will work with these shapes: rectangle, oval, and triangle. Every 5 lessons, we work on a problem solving activity which involves graphing. We will learn vocabulary for next, after, last, first, second, third, plus, equal, and add.
Social Studies – We will learn about the First Thanksgiving. On the week of Nov. 9, we will learn about pilgrims and their way of life. On the week of Nov. 16, we will learn about the Native Americans. Parents, please send 1 large brown paper grocery sack. The children will be making Indian vests. We need these bags on or before Thursday, November 8. Thank you! We will have a Thanksgiving feast on Tuesday, Nov. 24. You will receive a letter asking you to bring one item for the feast. We will be making friendship soup!
Science – We will continue to graph our daily weather and discover objects in our Can you Guess? box. We will also conduct various experiments related to our letters we are learning about.
Have a great month!

Mrs. Guerrero & Mrs. Burns – Kindergarten
Posted on September 24, 2009, by Melissa Guerrero, under Kindergarten.
Kindergarten is off to a great start! Please remember to look at the weekly newsletters for more detailed information. This is what we are doing this month:
Religion
We will discuss Creation and make a book about the story of Creation. We are also learning stories from the Old Testament – Cain and Abel and how to be our brother’s keeper. The last week of September, we will learn the prayer, My Guardian Angel and learn about the three angels mentioned in the Bible: Angel Gabriel, Angel Raphael, and Angel Michael.
Language Arts
Our first unit in our Open Court program is SCHOOL. The kids will engage in a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. The goals of this unit are to: have children see books as a valuable source for learning about school, offer children an opportunity to learn about the literary features of a narrative (audience, reader, writer), and to learn how to create literary works themselves. Each day we will work on phonemic awareness, letter and print recognition, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, listening, and speaking.
Math
This month, we are working on identifying numerals 0 – 5, rote counting, showing fingers to represent numerals 1 – 5, number line to 5, tallies numerals 1 – 5, sorting objects by color, recognizing shapes – circle, square, and triangle and identifying ten frame models to 5. Although many children already know the names of these numerals, the children will develop a deeper understanding and learn different representational models for the numerals.
Science
We will explore our 5 senses through various science experiments!
Social Studies
We will learn the Pledge of Allegiance and “God Bless America.” We will also learn about the rules of the classroom and how to treat one another.
We hope you have a great month!
