It is difficult to believe that we have already reached the end of another school year at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic School!!  We have had a great year with so many memorable moments, but is has flown by so quickly that  now the hot days of summer are not just looming around the corner, but they are actually HERE!!  Each year as I reflect back over the entire year, I am always so amazed and impressed with the accomplishments of our students, our parent community, as well as of those of us who serve you.  God is always so GOOD to us, and this year has been no exception to that rule!!!

Registration is still underway for the 2012-2013 school year.  If you should have any Admissions questions or know someone who would like to tour the school, please call (214) 331-5139 x21 and leave a message or email Sandy Walkley at swalkley@saintspride.com.  Mrs. Walkley will be checking messages and emails frequently and will return all calls and emails as expediently as possible!

As of June 1, 2012, if you have not funded your tuition from the Texas Catholic Credit Union, you will no longer be able to qualify for the 10-month payment plan.  All tuition and other outstanding fees must be paid by June 29th to ensure your child a place on the class list for the new school year.

The school’s summer hours are listed at the bottom of this post.  You will receive a magnet calendar with the Summer packet that will be sent home the middle of June.  Please note that our Back to School Open House is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, August 19th, and our first day of school for 2012-2013 is Tuesday, August 21st.

We will greatly miss our 8th grade graduates who will be moving on to their prospective high schools in August.  Each year the faculty votes on 8th grade students who exhibit the qualities needed for the Spirit, Most Improved, and Outstanding Student Award.  These awards go to special graduates who worked hard and always came to school with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.  Please join me in congratulating Kennedy Powell who was recognized as the Outstanding Graduate and received the prestigious Fr. Fred Sidler Scholarship Award.  She will be attending Ursuline Academy in the fall.  Jake Robb and Emma Borth were presented with the St. Elizabeth Spirit Awards.  They will both be attending Bishop Dunne High School .  Destiny Sanchez received the award for most improvement during the 8th grade year.  Destiny will be attending Dubiski High School in Grand Prairie.  We also congratulate Sydney Solis who received a 4 year renewable Opportunity Scholarship to Bishop Lynch High School.  All of our 8th grade graduates will be attending the high schools of their choice next year.

As we say farewell to our graduating class, we must also say farewell to a few of our most valued faculty who have given so much of themselves to the students of St. Elizabeth School:

  • Miss Houston, who has served St. Elizabeth’s for the past 2 years, will be leaving us to explore opportunities in the public school sector for next year.
  • Mrs. Powell, who has taught 4th grade & M.S. Social Studies at St. E’s for the past 7 years, will be temporarily retiring to become a full time mom!
  • Mrs. Belcher has served St. Elizabeth’s for the past 9 years as 2nd grade teacher and M.S. Religion teacher as well as been the school’s Director of Religious Education for the past several years!  Next year she will be teaching M.S. Religion at St. Maria Goretti School in Arlington, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump from where the Belchers live.
  • Mrs. Porter who has been a beloved preschool teacher for a total of 10 years has also decided to go into temporary retirement as a stay at home mom until her two youngest children are a little older.
  • Mrs. Kuterbach has faithfully served St. Elizabeth Parish and School as music teacher, music liturgist, and technology media specialist over the course of 13 years.  Her family plans to make a move to the north side of the metroplex, where her husband currently works, and she has landed a job as music teacher at Christ the King Catholic School for next year.

As we say good-bye to these talented, dedicated professional educators and wish them well, we give thanks to God for blessing St. Elizabeth School so abundantly through these wonderful individuals and pray that he will continue to bless them for what they share with others.

I wish for each and every one of you a safe, relaxing, blessed summer!  Let us continue to pray for one another.

God bless,

Christina Clem, M.Ed., Principal

Dear Parents,

As we close the Easter Season and experience the newness of the Holy Spirit through Pentecost, we are renewed in our gifts and commitment to Christ, and our lives in Him.  Our school is a wonderful example of the workings of the Holy Spirit.  The parish school is a ministry of the parish and, as such, has the benefit of having Fr. Mike as our pastor and Mrs. Clem as our principal.  Our desire to walk hand-in-hand with the parish, which serves the community, has manifested itself in our ability to work so closely together for the good of the entire community.  This past school year has been a wonderful example of Christianity in education and action.

Our school has contributed to the North Texas Food Bank, the Marillac Center, and to the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas, especially by donating items to the Advent Giving Tree.  Our students have given gifts and cards to the residents of local nursing homes, have depicted the Nativity of our Lord for them and for the parish.  We have picked up trash to show our desire to be good stewards of the earth that God has given us.  Our entire student body does service hours each year and our eighth graders do at the very least 30 hours during their eighth grade year.  We had four students who qualified and were admitted into the ’100 Club,’ denoting more than 100 hours of service done during their 8th grade year.  Our school is amazing!  Our students are hard-working, and our teachers are dedicated!  We are all very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community!  May God continue to bless St Elizabeth’s and extend the grace for her to be a beacon of goodness and academic excellence!

Have a beautiful and restful summer.  Come back safe and ready for another great year!!

It’s hard to believe we are at the end of another year! I want to encourage all parents to enroll their children in a summer reading or library program. Many children lose skills over the summer. There are so many ways to avoid this. There are many great summer programs for children, and tons of great computer programs. I would like to recommend Starfall for the early readers grades PK-2. Next year, St. Elizabeth will continue with pull out and push in programs for readers needing additional help. I would also like to encourage parents of Dyslexic students to take time over the summer to obtain audio textbooks for next year. Remember they are free!!!! Thank you for the opportunity to work with your precious children.

Have an amazing summer!

The month of April literally flew by for us in the preschool room.   We enjoyed our gardening day in combination with the Magnet Mania visitor.   Both of the events were truly exciting and the little ones thoroughly enjoyed getting dirty while being in touch with Science and Nature.   I often tell our prospective parents as they tour, that preschool is really not about the academics, but rather, it’s about finding a love for learning, school, nature, and LIFE!   The life skills that our students have developed, and have grown to trust and appreciate, far surpass any lesson I can teach about the ABC’s and 1-2-3′s!  I always take the month of May to slow down (yeah, right!) and reflect on the class as a whole, remembering back to the first few weeks of school, as the little ones came through that door feeling anxious and scared, but showing their pride for being ‘grown up enough’ to come to ‘big kid school’.   Now, at the end of the school year, I can stand back and watch in amazement as I overhear them working out little conflicts amongst themselves, using manners at the lunch tables, saying “excuse me” as they try to pass over another child’s play area, and best of all, observing them showing true affection toward their friends when they have been injured, or when

someone’s feelings have been hurt.   It makes me realize what teaching in a preschool classroom is REALLY all about!   I know that the academics are very important, but for our classroom, the LIFE skills of building friendships, exploring and investigating God’s amazing world, and being able to successfully function in a group setting with 14 other children, while respecting an adult’s authority other than Mommy and Daddy, are all life skills that lay the foundation for many years to come in a classroom.

This preschool class of 2012 has been successful in finding long-term friendships, have a true love for learning and trying new things, and have a solid foundation for the mechanics and fundamentals of academics. They know how to trust and turn to God in their time of need, and have a strong spirituality  Ms. Bowen and I have been equally as amazed at how far they have come and how much they have grown as you have been!   Thank you for an amazing school year, my littlest Saints.  I will truly miss you but always remember… you have left your tiny little footprint on my heart!  Congratulations to all of our precious students, you are the sunshine and you make our days special!   Have a safe and happy summer!

Hugs,

Mrs. Porter

Can you believe that we are into the last few weeks of the year?  We have had a wonderful year, and it seems like it just flew by!!!   We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for letting us have your little angels this year.  It has been a joy to teach them.  We don’t want to let them go!  It has been a jam packed month of May.  We had Young Authors Day, the Art Festival, May Crowning of Mary, and 1st grade has hosted Mass.

Social Studies – We studied about “Our Country, Our World”.  It included the market place, how things have changed, inventors and inventions, how travel has changed, and life of others around the world. We also discussed our great state of  Texas.

Religion – We talked about our church, how we belong to it,  and how Jesus chose Peter to lead His Church.  We haves talked about how Mary is the Mother of our church and how we honor her.  We celebrated the May crowning of Mary on May 18th.  We finished our discussion of the Holy Spirit.

Language Arts – We are finishing up with the weekly spelling tests.  We will also continue reading stories at school and testing on comprehension.  In phonics we will finish reviewing sounds that we have covered all year.  In grammar we have introduced adverbs and  commas.  We will have more on quotation marks, and review nouns, verbs, pronouns, sentence types, and adjectives.

Math

Wow what a year! We have worked really hard in math and have come a long way. We have added, subtracted, multiplied and divided. We have learned about reading graphs and charts. We have learned about comparing numbers and place value. We have learned about mean, median, mode and range. We have also learned about units of measurement as well as telling time. We have covered lots of material but still have more to learn. The last two weeks of school we will still be working hard! We will be learning about geometry as well as orders of operation.

Science

We are learning all about the geology. We have learned that geology is the study of earth’s structure. We learned that a geologist does not only study earth, they also study other planets and their moons. Ask your children about the different types of rocks and how they are formed. You can also asked them about what causes earthquakes and volcanoes, which they have learned about, too.

Social Studies

We finished our unit on inventors and explorers. We learned about many people who have shaped the world around us. We also know now that the world is continuing to change because people are always inventing and finding new things.

Religion

We have learned many things in religion from our ten commandments to our sacraments. We have learned many interesting facts about saints as well as a few prayers that can help us throughout our lives. We will finish the year discussing Mary our mother and how she intercedes for us.

Well 4th grade parents!  WE MADE IT!  I know it was a tough year, but we did it!  I hope this year was just as enjoyable for you and your student as it was for me.  Your children are true reflections of your hard work and determination for a bright future.  Thank you so much for an AMAZING and ROCK’N year.  I hope this summer brings you and your family a break from the chaos of the school year, and you are able to make new memories to hold onto for future years to come.

Things to keep in mind and pack into the beach bags this summer include keep up with where your students have left off with as they leave 4th grade.  Please make sure that your student continues to read over the summer.  This is so super important as it will help increase their reading Lexiles and allow them to continue to build onto their comprehension.  Rereads of novels that we have read in class will do wonders as well.  Rereading can be a great source of comprehension building.  When they reread, they are familiar with the novel already, so that they will continue to build onto their fluency as well as be able to

pick up any loose ends that they might have missed during the first read through.  Please continue to work on the math facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  This is key to the success in beginning 5th grade next year.  If you are interested in keeping your student busy in Math, pick an old weekly check up and create your own.  Important key concepts we touched on this year included, rounding into the hundred millions, place value, value of a number, expanded form, long hand division into the hundred thousands place, fractions with unlike denominators, improper fractions, orders of operation, multiplication of 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers,  converting measurements of liquids, length, time, telling time, and elapsed time.  Please understand that we have worked soooooo very hard on the simple concept of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Please continue to review over these basic concepts as the students will need to be VERY familiar with these concepts for next year.

Have a wonderful break, and again, thanks for a beautiful year.

The 5th grade has had a busy month.  We spent a week at the Pines Catholic camp for Environmental Studies and for faith building, and we had a wonderful time! We studied such diverse topics as entomology, limnology and meteorology, tried our best on the challenge courses and learned how to canoe. We came home in time to compete in the city wide finals of the Dancing Classrooms where we brought home a Bronze ribbon. We are finishing our math year by creating geometry books. In science we are looking at matter on the atomic level.

Dear Parents,

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for all you have done to make this a wonderful school year for me!  I have enjoyed teaching your children and have loved helping to prepare all of the classes who have led the school in Mass on Fridays.  I have also enjoyed the hugs and hellos I have experienced from students of all grade levels as I have walked down the halls each day!!
These are the warm and wonderful memories that I carry with me as I venture forth at the end of this year.  I will not be returning to St Elizabeth’s next year as I have been offered a position at St Maria Goretti Catholic School in Arlington, which is close to my home.  I have enjoyed my years at St Elizabeth’s and am sad to have to leave so many good friends and colleagues.
I will keep you in my prayers and I respectfully ask that you keep me in your prayers.
The summer packet that you receive in the mail may include Religion changes that you should be aware of as the school year gets off to a start in the Fall.

The end of the year is approaching fast and the science classes have been wrapping up their topics with projects and preparing for finals.

The 6th grade class, was given the opportunity to evaluate games prepare by 7th and 8th grade students.      The 7th graders made a board game which focused on health and the human body systems.   The 8th graders presented board games on water and air pollution.     The results were that students were exposed to what steps they can take to be more healthy and what they can do to prevent water and air pollution.   To conclude all they have learned this year, the 6th grade students completed an What I Learned This Year in Science A-Z book.  Each page is a letter of the alphabet, representing something they have learned this year.

Seventh grade science have completed and presented their Human Body System Projects.  Students compared and contrasted a selected human body system to that of a fish, amphibian, reptile and bird.  They also worked on a  A-Z book, similar to the 6th grade class.

The 8th graders are excited for graduation!   To end the year, we concluded our Environmental Science section with building a board games for younger students, teaching those who play the games about water and air pollution along with what they can do to reduce and prevent pollution.

Have a great and safe summer!

Mrs. Borth – Middle School Literature

All middle school students will be taking final exams soon. Their literature exam will be a skills test – meaning, there isn’t much for them to study. Each class will be given a different short story to read, annotate, and answer questions. We have been doing this all year together. There will also be some vocabulary words on the exam. These vocabulary words will be used in a paragraph so that students can use context clues to discover the meanings. Students will also be given a list of the exact vocabulary words that will be found on the exam.

7th grade

Well we are nearing the end of our school year, but we are not finished with learning.  We finished chapter 15 in our books and now we are reviewing.  Our final will cover chapters 1-15.  I have already posted the review on the MS Website.  Please be sure your child has printed it out.  My final comes straight from my old tests, so the students will need to bring in their binders that have all the questions on them.  The final does not take place until May 30th. Thanks and have a fabulous summer!

8th grade

The final will cover chapters 1-14.   I have already posted the review on the MS Website.  Please be sure your child has printed it out.  My final comes straight from my old tests, so they will need to bring in their binders that have all the questions on them.  The final does not take place until May 30th.  Thanks and have a fabulous summer!

Mrs. Connelly – Library

As the 2011-2012 school year comes to an end, I would like to thank the following library volunteers:  Linda Armijo, Marybeth Jones, Delilah Macias, Amy Solis and Euranie Williams.  My sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to St. Elizabeth organizations, students, parents, grandparents and all the Book Fair volunteers who have contributed so much energy, endless work and invaluable time to the library and its many activities.  Thanks to everyone who donated books and supplies.  This school year was a success because of great teamwork and constant support throughout the year.

One quick reminder:  All library books must be returned and late fees must be paid before the end of the year to receive final report cards.  This year, the library offered an amnesty week and many students took advantage of the opportunity to settle library overdue materials and outstanding fines.

Students who participated in the Six Flags Reading Program will receive their free admission ticket in the last report card envelope mailed in June.

A suggested reading list will be available in the library after May 30.

The library accepts book donations of AR, Reading Counts, and Blue Bonnet books that students have finished reading.  We welcome books in good condition and accept all titles.

This has been such a fantastic year!!  I’m looking forward to next year.  Have a great summer.

It is hard to believe that we have arrived at the end of the school year.  We continue to learn and have fun doing our restaurants and learning different things.  Our students have learned about silverware and utensils,  different kinds of foods, taking orders in Spanish, and last but not least, our very special verbs and the conjugations.  I have enjoyed seeing your child grow in many different and positive ways, and I hope to see them back next year.  Have a safe and relaxing summer.

Lesson 7 – The arts teach students to think through and within a material.
Lesson 8 – The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said.
Lesson 9 – The arts enable us to have experiences we can have from no other source.
Lesson 10 – The arts’ position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

Lessons the Arts Teach by the NAEA

What a year we have had in art.  It has seriously flown by. I want to thank all of you for your support this year.  I believe that art education is so important, especially at the lower levels.  Each year I try to teach a curriculum filled with as many mediums as possible.  Letting the kids get in there and try new things is what it is all about.

Just last week we had our anuual Arts Fest.   The school was filled from top to bottom with you child’s artwork.  It looked fabulous.  I want to thank all the volunteers and families that took time out of their busy schedules to attend.  If you missed it here are some pictures from the show.

Portfolios will be going home as soon as we wrap up our last projects.  Thank you again for a great 1st year at St. Elizabeth.  I hope you all have a wonderful summer break.

Mrs. Connelly – 3rd & 5th Grade Art

What a creative and colorful year we’ve had!  I am so proud of all our young artists.  The 3rd Annual Art Fest was a tremendous success as the school hallways proudly displayed students’ artwork.  Awesome paintings and art projects hung throughout the school.  Thanks to all parents and families who attended this year’s Art Fest.

3rd and 5th grade students placed their art “masterpieces” in the school’s Annual Silent Auction.  Both paintings were very well received.

Individual art portfolios will be going home next week so please be on the lookout for these.  This summer as you clean out closets, attics, or garages and happen to come across any items you think we might be able to use in the art room, please send me an email about your findings.

Thank you for sharing such wonderful young artists with me this year.  Have a great fun-filled summer.

Mrs. Kuterbach – Music

The year has zipped by once again! Our final weeks will be focused on tone color in music. The instrument show and tell week this year began on May 14th. Students were able to bring any musical instrument they may have at home, working or non working, for the class to see. We saw many instruments, and piano students were invited to play during class. It is wonderful to see so many budding musicians.

We enjoyed so many delightful performances during the Young Authors Day. 1B acted out the aria Nessun Dorma from the opera Turandot by Puccini. 1A followed with a performance using scarves to demonstrate staccato and legato to the music of The Syncopated Clock by Leroy Anderson. With lots of help from Mrs. Belcher, the fifth grade gave us the story of Noah in the musical Ark-e-ology. The eighth grade girls serenaded us with some handbell selections. It was a fantastic day!

Summer boredom? Be sure to check the St. Elizabeth Music Wiki for links to some great music websites to keep your musical skills going until we meet again in August.

Thank you to all for your continued support of the fine arts programs at St. Elizabeth.

During our End-of-Year Party, Tuesday, May 22, 2012, the Tech/Lego/Robotics and Environmental Club members enjoyed pizza and special treats provided by each student while they watched  6B boys Robotics.  Each robotics team built, programmed and named their robot in a very unique fashion.  Some members,  notably Oscar Gurrola, brought in their Lego creations to show the group as well.  We have had a great year and thank all the members for their participation.
